What is Elimite?

Drug Uses

Elimite deals with parasites which breed on the skin and scalp, by attacking their nervous systems. As a topical pediculicide and scabicide, it is administered as a treatment for head lice infestation and scabies.

How to Take Elimite

In treating scabies, administer a thin application of the cream thoroughly on all the affected body parts, starting from the neck, and down to the soles of your feet (your head is rarely infected with scabies). For infants, make extra applications on the forehead and surrounding hairline, the scalp and temples, and on the neck. Rub the medication thoroughly on dry skin, and leave it in for eight to 14 hours before rinsing it off. Scabies is normally treated with only one application. For the treatment of head lice, apply the lotion on newly shampooed and rinsed hair, enough to saturate it well. Leave it for ten minutes before rinsing it with water. A single treatment should be able to get rid of the infection.

Drug Precautions

Avoid applying the medication to facial orifices like the eyes, nose, and mouth. Rinse off any residue which get into these areas. Keep the applications away from any exposed cuts or wounds; too much of the drug may be absorbed into the body, and cause potentially health-threatening consequences. Do not use Elimite if you bear an allergic reaction to chrysanthemums, or if you are allergic to any of the medication’s components. The drug is not normally harmful to an unborn child, and although it passes through breast milk, the possibilities for harmful effects on a nursing child is as yet undetermined. If you are pregnant or nursing, take Elimite while under medical supervision.

Drug Interactions

Avoid applying other topical creams on the affected areas if these are currently being treated with Elimite. If you are using any kind of medication, tell your doctor first before you consider on using the medication as a treatment for your condition.

Side Effects

Severe adverse effects which result from Elimite applications rarely occur. Discontinue using it and seek medical advice if you obtain an allergic reaction to it (labored breathing, a constricted feeling on your throat, hives, and inflamed areas on your face), or if you incur a numbing, stinging, itching, or tingling sensation, accompanied by red, swollen, skin rashes. If your condition does not improve, or if you experience severe itching and inflammation, stop using it altogether.

Missed Dose

Elimite is intended for only a single application, so it is unlikely that you will miss or skip a dose.

Using too much of the medication can cause severe irritation, and erythema. If you believe that you may have used too much of this product, or if you have ingested it in substantial amounts, contact a doctor, or seek medical aid from the nearest emergency facility.
