What is Diflucan?

Drug Uses

Diflucan is an antifungal drug with antibiotic properties. It is administered as treatment for fungal infections; these can occur on any part of the patient’s body, such as the genital area, the mouth, throat, and esophagus; the blood, lungs, and gall bladder. The medication is also used as a preventive treatment for fungal infections, in patients with impaired immune systems due to HIV or AIDS, bone marrow transplants, and cancer therapy.

How to Take Diflucan

Your dose of Diflucan depends on the infection being treated. For vaginal infections, a single dose is usually enough. For other types of infection, the first dose may have to be taken as a double dose. Follow your instructions, and inform your physician if your conditions persist. Take the tablet form with water if necessary. Shake well the oral suspension form before measuring out each dose. Make sure you complete the treatment regimen in its entirety, even if you feel that you are getting better; the infection may not yet be completely treated.

Drug Precautions

Diflucan cannot treat viral infections like colds and influenza. Do not take the medication if you are allergic to it, or to medications similar to it like econazole and terconazole. Your doctor should also know if you are allergic to other drugs, or if you carry renal or liver problems, a disorder with your heart rhythm, or a record of Long QT Syndrome in the family; you may be required to take on a regulated dose, or you may take preliminary evaluation before being allowed to take Diflucan.

Drug Interactions

Various medications can contraindicate with Diflucan, and the following are just a few of such drugs: an oral intake diabetes medication like glipizide, or tolazamide; anticoagulants like warfarin; sedatives, including diazepam and alprazolam; cyclosporine; seizure drugs like phenytoin and valproic acid; tacrolimus; theophylline; and rifabutin or rifampin. Ensure that your doctor is informed about your intake of such drugs, or of all of your medications for that matter; these include OTC, herbal, and supplemental products as well.

Side Effects

You may observe these conditions begin to develop after an intake of Diflucan. These are severe side effects of use; contact your doctor immediately: convulsive seizures; symptoms indicative of influenza like fever with chills, and an aching body; unusual feebleness; extreme blisters, skin rashes, and peeling; queasiness, stomach ache, a slight fever, jaundice, a lost appetite, and a darker color on the urine or in the stool.

Missed Dose

Do not take a missed dose if the next intake is already due; this would result in a double dose, with severe health consequences. Skip over the missed dose and take the next one as scheduled.

Overdose

An overdose of Diflucan may be indicated by vexation and irregular thoughts or behavior. Seek medical attention at once if you believe that you have taken the medication in excessive doses.

Storage

You may store Diflucan in a refrigerator, but keep it from freezing; the ideal temperatures are between 5 to 30C.
