Drug Uses

Denavir is a topical medication for treating persistent cold sores. It is an antiviral drug which deals with outbreaks of the condition on a patient’s lips and face. The medication may also be used for other conditions and purposes, under the discretion of a doctor.

How to Take Denavir

Denavir is administered by topical application. Apply the medication to cold sore abrasions once every two hours during your waking periods; the treatment course usually lasts for four days, unless you are instructed otherwise. Keep the applications only within the sore lesions on the lips and face. In order to obtain the best benefit, use the drug as soon as you experience the symptoms associated with the condition. Avoid getting the medicine anywhere inside your nose or near your eyes, to prevent irritation and contamination of these uninfected areas.

Drug Precautions

Denavir is for external use only; do not ingest it, and do not apply it on any of your bodily orifices, such as your genital area, your mouth, ear, nose, and rectum. The medication is not likely to cause harm to an unborn child, and it is not yet determined if it passes through breast milk. Do not take Denavir without medical advice if you are currently conceiving or breastfeeding a baby. There are relatively no restrictions on your food and beverage intake while under treatment; the same goes with any activity you may be involved in (unless otherwise advised).

Drug Interactions

Avoid using other topical administration medications on the same areas where you apply Denavir for treatment; simultaneous applications of such drugs may hamper the effect of Denavir, or they may worsen the condition. Apart from this, no other medications are known to contraindicate with Denavir; but do take extra precaution when you are using it if you are currently taking any form oral medicine, including all forms of prescription, OTC, supplement, and herbal products.

Side Effects

Although there are currently no severe adverse effects which have been incurred as a result of using Denavir, you may experience these more common conditions: migraine headaches; a lack of feeling or a tingling sensation which is localized only on the area of application; varying taste sensitivities; skin rash; and a subsequent irritation on the application area. Other side effects other than the abovementioned symptoms can occur. If you experience any of these signs, and if any symptom persists or increases in intensity, seek medical advice.

Missed Dose

If you forget to make a scheduled application, you may make up for it as soon as you are able to. However, the drug’s potency relies in regular use, so keeping your applications regularly maintained is highly advisable.

Overdose

Too much applications of Denavir are does not cause life-threatening conditions; but if you inadvertently ingest the cream, contact a poison management center within your area immediately.

Storage

Keep the container tube tightly-capped at all times. Store it away from areas of extreme heat and moisture, and within ideal temperatures of 20-25C.
