What is Clarinex?

Drug Uses

Clarinex affords relief from symptoms which are usually associated with hay fever (also called seasonal allergic rhinitis). One of its main components is a sustained-action tricyclic histamine inhibitor; it also contains H1-receptor histamine blockers. It is an effective treatment for allergic symptoms like running nose, watery eyes, and stubborn sneezing fits. In some cases it may be administered for treating hives and skin itching, in patients who have acute skin reactions.

How to Take Clarinex

Clarinex is intended for oral administration. It may come in tablet or liquid suspension form. The tablet must be swallowed whole, and should not be grounded, chewed, or broken prior to ingestion. If it is in liquid form, shake the bottle first before measuring out the dose. Take the oral-dissolving tablet by taking it out from the peeled blister pack (with dry hands) and placing it on the tongue; the pill will start to dissolve almost immediately. Let it dissolve thoroughly, before swallowing it in several gulps.

Drug Precautions

Do not take Clarinex if you are allergic to any of its components, of if you bear an allergic reaction to similar medications (like desloratadine and loratadine). Prior to taking the medication, inform your doctor of any current kidney or liver illness; you’re dosage may be adjusted accordingly, or you may not be allowed to take Clarinex altogether. The drug may cause harmful effects on an unborn child, and there is also a possibility that it may pass to a nursing child through breast milk, so pregnant and nursing women should take extra precautions before using Clarinex.

Drug Interactions

There is a tendency for Clarinex to interact with other medications if it is used simultaneously with such. It is important that you inform a health practitioner about all of the medications which you are currently taking, including over-the-counter medicines, and prescriptions made by other doctors. This also applies to supplemental vitamins and minerals, as well as alternative and herbal products.

Side Effects

It is difficult to anticipate any possible side effects resulting from an intake of Clarinex. However, if you experience any symptoms which gradually develop or vary in intensity, seek medical help immediately. There is a good possibility that you may incur a parched mouth, drowsiness, fatigue, or sore throat. Uncommon effects may include nausea, dizziness, muscle pains, and flu-like symptoms. On rare occasions, severe allergic reactions and a rapid heart rate may be experienced.

Missed Dose

If by chance you forget to take a scheduled dose, make up for it as soon as you can. But if it the next intake is almost due, skip the dose and take the next one, according to your prescribed dosing schedule.

Overdose

Not much is known about the overdose symptoms of Clarinex. But if you do suspect that you have taken it in excess, seek for medical aid at once. Possible indications of an overdose may include drowsiness and a quickened heartbeat.

Storage

Keep Clarinex tightly-capped in its container, away from moisture and heat.
