What is Celexa?

Drug Uses

Celexa is part of a drug classification recognized as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. It can have a substantial influence on specific chemicals in the brain, regulating their levels and inhibiting the symptoms of an imbalance. As such, the drug is used for treating depression disorders.

How to Take Celexa

Celexa tablets are for oral administration. The normal dose is one pill a day, for a treatment period predetermined by your doctor. It may be taken on an empty stomach or right after a meal. It is best if you take the medication at the same approximate times each day, or as indicated on the drug label. It is normal for you to take Celexa for four weeks before you begin to feet its benefits. If you have been taking it for a prolonged period, do not discontinue using it without prior instruction to do so; you may incur uncomfortable side effects as a consequence.

Drug Precautions

If you are suffering from mania, seizures, or kidney and liver disorders, inform your physician first before you take Celexa. This also applies if you have suicidal tendencies or thoughts. You may be given an adjusted dose, you may be monitored during treatment, or you may not be allowed to take Celexa entirely. If you are at an age of below 24 years, you may experience suicidal thoughts as soon as the first couple of weeks of taking the antidepressant; seek medical advice if similar symptoms worsen during such period, especially if your dose is adjusted.

Drug Interactions

Any medication which is used for pain management, fever, inflammation, or arthritis can interact with Celexa, causing you to bruise or bleed more easily. These include ibuprofen, piroxicam, aspirin, etodolac, indomethacin, and nabumetone. Various other medications can also interfere with the potency of Celexa, including warfarin, a type of blood thinner; lithium, carbamazepine, and cimetidine; other types of antidepressants like amitriptyline, fluvoxamine, sertraline, escitalopram, nortriptyline, and fluoxetine; and frovatriptan, sumatriptan, or zolmitriptan.

Side Effects

If you incur an allergic reaction as a consequence of taking Celexa, or if you experience the following adverse effects, seek medical help at once: coordination and balance difficulties; seizure or convulsive episodes; shivering, accompanied by muscle stiffness or spasms; and confusion, accompanied by profuse sweating, agitation, and a brisk heartbeat. Seek urgent medical aid if you incur any new or increasing indications of behavioral changes, like depression or suicidal thoughts.

Missed Dose

Make up for a missed intake as soon as you are able to do so. However, if your next scheduled dose is due, skip the missed intake and follow your usual dosing schedule.

Overdose

Indications which suggest an overdose of Celexa can include sinus tachycardia, dizziness, profuse sweating, somnolence, and queasiness. Amnesia, coma, convulsions, and hyperventilation may be experienced in extreme cases of overdose; if you incur such symptoms, seek medical help at once.

Storage

Dispense Celexa tablets in tight-capped containers; keep it stored in a dry area, within maintained room temperatures of 15 to 30C.
