What is Bentyl?

Drug Uses

Bentyl provides relief from stomach and intestinal muscle spasms, by hampering the functions of specific chemicals within your body. It is normally administered for treating functional or irritable bowel syndrome, but may also be given as treatment for other conditions and purposes.

How to Take Bentyl

The drug is meant for oral administration; follow your doctor’s instructions regarding the intake of Bentyl. Avoid taking it in greater dosages or amounts, and use it only for the entire length of the treatment period. You may take the medication with water if needed. If it comes in oral suspension form, measure out the liquid with the use of the dose-measuring cup which is usually provided with the package. Avoid using an ordinary table spoon in place of a dose-measuring device.

Drug Precautions

Avoid the intake of antacids if you are currently using Bentyl; these can inhibit your system’s ability to absorb the medication easily. The drug can lead to side effects which interfere with your normal vision or reactions. Take caution whenever you are involved in activities which require your visual acuity and alertness. Alcohol can also enhance the adverse effects brought about by using Bentyl. Keep yourself thoroughly hydrated if you are exercising in warm weather; the medication can significantly reduce your sweating, leading to a stroke in a warm environment.

Drug Interactions

Take Bentyl with prior medical advice if you are currently under any of these medications: sedatives; phenothiazines like chlorpromazine, mesoridazine, and thioridazine; amantadine and quinidine; drugs for cold or allergies; narcotic medications for pain management; steroids or digoxin; MAO inhibitors like phenelzine, selegiline, and isocarboxazid; stimulants, including diet and caffeine pills; antidepressant medicine like amitriptyline, clomipramine, and imipramine. This is also applicable if you are also taking any vitamin supplements, over-the-counter medications, or herbal products.

Side Effects

You may incur adverse conditions resulting from an intake of Bentyl; if you experience these severe symptoms, stop using it and obtain medical help at once: infrequent urination; vexation, hallucination, and thoughts and behavior which appears unusual; an inability to urinate normally; an allergic reaction which may be combined symptoms of hives, inflammation of specific areas of the face, and laborious breathing; and a very rapid, palpitating, irregular heartbeat. Non-serious effects of Bentyl include blurry vision, a lack of appetite, a slight itch or rash, bloating, stomach pains, migraine headaches, a stuffed nose, and a parched mouth.

Missed Dose

If you miss an intake, make sure that you make up for it as soon as you can. But if the next dose in your intake schedule is almost due, skip over the missed dose, and take the next dose according to your prescription.

Overdose

Overdose indications can involve enlarged pupils, convulsions, tremor, restlessness or anxiety, numbness or tingling, paralysis, headaches, a sensation of light-headedness, a ringing sound in your ears, and a parched mouth. Seek medical attention if you believe that you have taken too much of the medication.

Storage

Store and dispense Bentyl within normal room temperatures.
