What is Agrin?

Agrin is a protein released by growing axons to promote (acetylcholine receptors) AchR clustering in the developing muscle cell. It does so by forming a complex with an unknown receptor protein and Muscle Specific tyrosine kinase (MuSK). Activated (phosphorylated) MuSK in turn recruits other cellular factors that lead to AChR immobilization. Agrin also implicated in regulation of presynaptic differentiation, acting as a stop signal or recruiting stop signals.
