Almost everyone gets nervous about their first day of school because they do not know anyone in their class. The idea of making friends with some of the new people in your class may seem somewhat overwhelming. After all, you are going to need to talk to people that you may have never even seen before. Here are some tips for making new friends at school.
Look For People You Recognize
When you get to class on the first day of school, the best thing that you can do is look for people who you recognize. They may be a friend of a friend, someone that you are on a sports team with, or even an old neighbor. Immediately talk to them. This will help ensure that you have at least one new friend at school. Remember that you are not always going to recognize someone that you know in every class, however.
Introduce Yourself to New Classmates
You are never going to be able to make new friends with someone until you begin talking to them. The easiest way that you can do this is by introducing yourself to them. Start with the kids who are sitting at your table, or in your row. They will be what you can consider as your neighbors for the class. Making friends with them should be easy, and it is likely that they will want to get to know you better as well. It is likely that you are feeling a bit nervous about introducing yourself to new classmates, but it is important to keep in mind that some of them may be just as nervous. One of you is going to need to break the ice, so it might as well be you.
Try to Find People With Common Interests
Looking for things that you may have in common with your classmates can help you make new friends. If one of the other kids has a Dora the Explorer book bag, this could be a great opening for a conversation. Offering a complement about someone or something that they have that you like can be an excellent way to encourage your classmates to talk to you. Just remember that almost everyone enjoys making friends with people that they know are similar to them in some way, so finding people with common interests is a great idea.
The most important thing that you should keep in mind is that you do not need to give up all of your old friends just because you are making new ones. Even though you may no longer have class with them, you can still see them on the weekends. At the same time, there is no reason to hold yourself back from making new friends because it makes you feel like you aren’t being loyal to your old ones. Since you are going to be spending a lot of time in class with the new students, you will want to make friends with as many of them as possible. It will make the school year a lot more fun for you in the long run.
