Surviving School Shootings And Violence

School shootings are unfortunately a reality in the society that we live in and turning the other cheek is just plain dangerous. The news is constantly reporting about incidents of school violence. The best thing that you can do is to arm yourself with the knowledge that you might need to escape any situation of school violence that you find yourself in. This is not the easiest thing in the world to do, but there are some things to keep in mind. Here is how to survive a school shooting:

The first thing to remember in a school shooting is that you should always escape if you have any means to do so. If a window is reasonably close to the ground, then you should jump and run to safety. If their are any avenues with which to get away, then you should take them. The only exception to this rule is if it will take you in the sight of the shooter.

If you see that you can not escape, then you need to barricade yourself in the room that you are in. Put anything and everything that you can in front of the door, and lock it if you can. If the door is not a lockable door, then you need to barricade it as good as possible. Do not hold the barricade in place, as the shooter may fire through the door. Simply barricade it and back away from the line of fire through the door.

Once you have barricaded the door, then you should turn off all cell phones in the room. Any sudden noise can draw the attention of the shooter. Turn them off or have the emergency services on the line with you. Next, you should hide as best you can, and make sure you are laying flat on the floor. This is so that if the shooter gets in and fires randomly, the bullets will likely go over your head.

If the shooter gets into the room, then you should stay as silent as possible. Do not scream or yell, and stay low to the ground and as hidden as possible. If the shooter actually shoots you, then you should play dead. If you act as though you are dead, then the shooter will likely move on.

Finally, if you are cornered and you absolutely know that you are going to be shot, then you should fight. Do not stand there and let them shoot you. Pick up anything that you can possibly protect yourself with, and fight with all your might. Many schools will not endorse this particular tip, but the fact is it could save your life. Do not fight unless it is your absolute last resort, however. Somebody with a gun has a huge advantage over you even if you catch them by surprise. Always try to avoid contact with the school shooter at all times.
