Toddler television is not what it used to be. Thank God. Back in my toddler days it seemed that I had about three choices, and if I slept in late I missed at least half of them. Thanks to entire networks dedicated to toddlers and children, kids now have options for entertainment at any hour of the day or night. For all the shows out there, however, there are a few that are absolutely head and shoulders above the rest. Here are the five best toddler television shows according to my twin girls:

The Backyardagins - Pablo, Tyrone, Uniqua, Tasha, and Austin have quickly become a house favorite among the kids and parents alike. These cute little guys use their imaginations to solve all kinds of problems and adventures. The beauty of this show is the incredible way that it holds the attention of my girls even during re-runs. That is the magic of a great toddler television show.
Dora the Explorer - Though she weirds me out with that blank stare, her incredible popularity is there for a reason. Kids absolutely adore Dora the Explorer along with all her friends. Backpack, Boots and even that adorable Swiper are all household names around here, and they all teach my children something while they watch television.
Go, Diego, Go - Diego is the male version of Dora and my daughters are taking a particular liking to him that I do not like so much. Still, the show is very much on the same level as Dora, and is very entertaining for my six year olds. Diego and Dora together is an occasional special treat for our daughters, and can be for yours as well.
The Wonder Pets - Without a doubt, the Wonderpets are my favorite toddler friends. This show is so adorable that even parents have to sit and watch. The adventures of all the little animals are very fun for the girls, and the music is infectious as well. Every episode when the little ducky says “This is sewious” (serious) our entire family laughs out loud.
Spongebob Squarepants - I hesitated to add old Squarepants here because he rides the fence for toddler appropriateness. The truth is, I have never seen an episode that bothered me for my children to see it. The rumors and stuff that circulated on the Internet are either above my head, or silly made up bull. Either way, the show is hilarious and a great one for parents and children to see together. I love it as much as my toddlers.
