If you are a teenager without a cell phone, there is a good chance that you want one. It is likely that most of your friends already have cell phones, which probably just adds to the reasons that you want one. Are you really ready for a cell phone, however? Here are some of the questions that any teen should ask themselves before asking their parents for a cell phone.
Why Do You Need a Cell Phone?
It is important to ask yourself why you need a cell phone. You may want one because everyone else has one but why do you need one? Teenagers who have a driver’s license will want to have a cell phone to use in the event of an emergency, such as a car accident, or to simply call home with to let your parents know where you are. If you go out with your friends a lot, such as the mall or movie theater, it is also a good idea for you to have a cell phone.
Who Will Pay For the Bill and Phone?
Another one of the main factors that needs to be taken into consideration is the expenses involved with a cell phone. You will need to pay for the cell phone when you purchase it. Every month afterwards, someone will need to pay for the phone bill. If your parents already have a cell phone plan, you may be able to add a line for only ten dollars more a month. Also keep in mind that you may need to also add a text messaging plan. Are you going to pay for the bill from the money that you make at an after school job or will your parents be willing to pay it?
Are You Responsible Enough For a Cell Phone?
You will also want to ask yourself if you are responsible enough for a cell phone. Will you avoid going over your cell phone minutes or text messages? Are you also going to be able to keep tabs on your cell phone at all times? If you do not feel that you are ready for a cell phone and the responsibilities that come with having one, then you may want to think about purchasing a prepaid cell phone. You will be limited to the number of minutes that you use, which can force you to become responsible enough for a regular cell phone.
If you are able to provide positive answers to all of these questions, there is a good chance that you are ready for a cell phone of your own. Now, all that you will need to do is convince your parents to allow you to have one. Bringing up the fact that it is important for you to keep in touch with your parents at all times should help encourage them to allow you to have one. Also be sure to let them know that you have come up with a way to pay for the cell phone or the monthly bill and that you are responsible enough to keep the monthly bill at the normal rate. Letting them know that you have put a lot of thought into how responsible you will be with a new cell phone should help make them feel better about allowing you to have one.
