Definition of Bluetooth

Bluetooth is a peer-to-peer, short-range protocol named after Haral Bluetooth, the king of Denmark in the late 900s. It is used to connect cellular phones, laptops, handheld computers, digital cameras, printers, and so on. It is defined in IEEE standard, IEEE 802.15 and has the following characteristics.

  • FHSS - Hops 1,600 times per second among 79 RF channels
  • Transmission rate - 1 Mbps
  • Transmission distance - About 30 feet
  • Frequency band - 2.4 Ghz to 2.5 Ghz
  • Transmitting power - 1 milliwatt, which minimizes interference with other networks (cell phones can transmit up to 3 watts of power)
  • Transmission range extension - Range can be extended to 300 feet by increasing transmitting power to 100 milliwatts
  • Number of devices on the network - 8
