Definition of IMAP

The Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP) is a method of accessing e-mail on a remote server. It was designed for use where the e-mail will stay on the remote server, and the user may access the e-mail from more than one client. In this way, the user can be mobile and still have access to all the new and old e-mails. IMAP supports capabilities for retaining e-mail and organizing it in folders on the server. IMAP is often used as a remote file server.
