Definition of POP

The Post Office Protocol (POP) is used to retrieve e-mail from a mail server. POP3 is the most recent version of the protocol and is available in all popular mail clients. POP3 is intended for users to download their e-mail from a mail server on which they have an account or mailbox. Most e-mail clients have a default behavior of deleting the mail on the server after it is downloaded. POP3 does not support sending e-mail.
