Definition of Bridge

Bridges are devices that are used to connect two or more hosts or network segments together. Bridges work only at the physical and link layer level and use the hardware Media Access Control (MAC) addresses for transferring frames. The basic role of bridges in network architecture is storing and forwarding frames between the different segments that it connects. Typically, a single bridge can have more than two ports, which means that more than two networking elements can be combined to communicate with each other using a single bridge.
