Definition of DHCP

Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol. A protocol that is beginning to be used quite pervasively on end-system computers to automatically obtain an IP (Internet Protocol) host address, subnet mask, and local gateway information. A DHCP server dynamically supplies this information in response to end-system broadcast requests.
