Definition of MTU

Maximum Transmission Unit. The maximum size of a data frame that can be carried across a data-link layer. Every host and router interface has an associated MTU related to the physical media to which the interface is connected, and an end-to-end network path has an associated MTU that is the minimum of the individual-hop MTUs within the path.
