The internet is an amazing thing; it has literally opened up the whole world and brought it right into our homes. But, along with all the good things it’s also brought an entire world of danger into our homes. Nowadays social networking has became the way of meeting new people and making new friends. It’s estimated that there are several hundred social networking sites and most of the millions of members are minors.

Anyone can be at risk when participating in a virtual online life, but children are the most vulnerable. The disappearances of more and more children is proof of the dangers that lurk behind the computer screen.

Special agents and officers that are associated with the FBI have reported the increased use of these types of sites by sex offenders. The sexual predators take advantage of their hidden identities and prowl these sites looking for victims. The FBI and social networking companies are now working together to detect these sex offenders and create a safer environment. But, parents also need to do their part in helping to keep their children safe.

Educate your children in the dangers of giving out personal information online. They should never use their real names or give out addresses and phone numbers. If your child completes a profile, check it and make sure they’ve not included private information. Also, make sure that they’ve not misrepresented their age. The dangers can work both ways, if someone that’s 25 thinks they’re talking to someone around the same age.

While many sexual predators often seek out minors, some will pass them by if they know they’re real age. And, demand to see the profiles of the friends your child talks to. Although, a predator isn’t going to be honest in their profiles, you may see something that appears suspicious. As an extra precaution, agree to only let the child use social networking sites if they keep their profiles set to private. And, only allow them to add friends from school or family members.

Most social networking sites are as concerned about your child’s safety as you are. Many of them give parents the authority to block any questionable users from being able to contact their children. It’s also a very good idea to read the list of safety tips that the site provides. If you see or suspect any inappropriate or suspicious behavior, report the user to the sites administration immediately.

Don’t lecture your child, but just discuss your concerns for their safety with them. Encourage your child to feel free to talk to you anytime they feel threatened or uncomfortable with someone they’ve talked to online.

If your child suddenly becomes obsessive or secretive about their online activities, it may be time to worry. And, if you have a real concern, you can use filtering software to block websites that you don’t want your child visiting.

Indiana has became one of the first states to make it illegal for any registered sex offender that has been convicted of a crime involving a child to use a social networking website. The new law that goes into effect next week also bars them from chat rooms and instant messaging.
