These are all great ideas and I know plenty of people that are making money on facebook with these techniques. However, many people do not have the resources or technical know-how to make money on facebook by building popular applications. I think that many people just want to make extra income by “working” a couple of hours a week.

You are right though that the big money is in applications.

Writing a book on the subject might be a great idea… I’ll check that out.

As far as developing — I was actually looking at that earlier today — it seems a bit complex, but if I have the time, I’ll play around with it. I don’t know PHP / Python or Javascript, so I would be going at it in Perl (CGI), and that doesn’t seem to be officially supported. Though, while most freelancers are freelancers for a reason, at $200-$500 per hour, that should be appealing to a wide constituency. I like working for myself, but I wouldn’t hesitate for a gig paying a couple of hundred bucks per hour — I average about $50.

There is an app out that allows users to make money, and it doesn’t ‘go against the grain’ of the social community feel (friends / people you know) — http://apps.facebook.com/referquest/ — it’s like a referral program, but instead of promoting a product or service, you’re basically advertising for individuals who are looking for something — a car, to sell a couch, a dentist, etc. Something like this is more palatable in a social network setting than trying to sell an eBook or credit repair services.

I’m seeing the value of Facebook for building up clients and selling more services, though — I’ve added a couple of my clients to my network, and a good word, especially when read by somebody else who is looking for that service, can bring in more sales.
