Planting Your Own Strawberries

Growing strawberries right at your own garden is a terrific idea. It can be said that strawberries are among the most useful type of fruits which can always find its way to every usage regardless of occasion. From breakfast to lunch to dinner and of course dessert, strawberries always reign supreme. You can either have it as it is, dipped in cream or sugar or chopped up and squeezed to be used as a perfect mixture for something in the kitchen. Aside from these, you can also use and manufacture strawberries for many different uses. But for whatever reason you decide to use strawberries, one thing you should keep in mind is that planting them does involve hard labor.

strawberriesHaving strawberries in your backyard do not happen overnight, so it will really be a good idea to learn about them first before you get down to it. After all, strawberries have separate types of ways in which they can grow and bear just as you would have thought they could. This being said, you have to understand how strawberries grow and also in accordance with the season and other important conditions when they have been planted. The first of which involves pointing out which category does your strawberry belong to.

Strawberries can produce fruits depending on the season. In June, strawberries can actually manage to produce voluminously large berries during the spring. However, there are a couple of disadvantages linked with strawberries brought out in June. The first is that they will only be able to bear fruit once every year and that in the first year of having them, you will have to go through the rigorous task of plucking out each and every blossom to make sure that the strawberries become established firmly.

There are also those types of strawberries which are referred to as “ever-bearing.” However, being an ever-bearing type of strawberry does not necessarily mean that the berries ready for harvest will get continuously replenished. Ever-bearing strawberries are aptly named as such because they can manage to produce berries for harvest twice a year. Another type of strawberry you may have heard of is the day-neutral ones. Some people tend to go for planting day-neutral strawberries especially if they will be used for business purposes. This is because this type of strawberries is able to produce a large crop of berries throughout the growing season. However, the sizes of the berries are notably smaller yet sweeter.

As soon as you have this covered, the next thing you needed to consider will be the site where you’ll have your strawberries planted. It is best to plant them right on the sunniest spot of your garden because they rely a lot on sunlight to produce the best types of harvest. You should also be careful enough to plant them away from other plants such as tomatoes, potatoes, eggplant, and peppers because these plants have some verticillium wit which can affect the growth of your strawberries destructively. Choose a spot where it can be easy for you to cultivate your strawberries.
