Saving money is one of those things that we all know we should do, yet many of us do not ever get around to doing it. The biggest reason so many people never save is because a large portion of Americans are living paycheck to paycheck. When virtually every dime is going out before the next paycheck comes in, it is hard to squeeze in savings. So what is a person that lives paycheck to paycheck to do for savings?
The first thing to do is to change your state of mind. If you are of the mind that paycheck to paycheck is the only option for you, then that will be your situation. You have to know that better things are available to you if you are willing to work for it, and find a way to work it in. The best place to start on this road to saving is with a review of what you spend.
Virtually every single person on the planet spends money somewhere each paycheck that is unnecessary. If it is one dollar or one hundred dollars, that is money that can be used in a better way. Saving money is a habit and a state of mind. If you get that habit started, then you will suddenly find yourself finding money to put back. Review all of your spending for one month. Every single penny should be written down.
Once you have written down your spending for a solid month, then you can go through it item by item. Every single thing that was not an absolute must should be highlighted. Once you have finished with this, then you should add up those total purchases. You will be shocked at how much it adds up to in most cases. That money in yellow could have been your savings for the month.
For those of you that say I have no yellow spending, then I would say first to look again. Most everyone has something that they buy that they do not really need. If you insist that not a penny is wasted, then it is time to get a part time job. If not a part time job, then maybe you should look at searching for a better job. I do not mean just looking at the classifieds every so often. I mean getting out there and beating the street looking.
Saving is something that you choose to do to secure a better future. Few things in the financial world take precedence over saving, and paycheck to paycheck living is no excuse. Choose to take control of your financial lives, and you will quickly see a better life for you now and for your home in the future.
