Ideas for Decorating Kid’s Rooms

Looking for some easy, cute ways to personalize your child’s room? Look no further than this helpful article.

A Handy Idea!

You don’t need to always clean your child’s handprints off the wall. If you want you can have your kid dip his or her hands in a colorful acrylic paint and decorate the bedroom walls using their own inspiration.

You can do this in pastel colors or your basic brights. This can also be done on a floor cloth to make a cute rug for their room. If you do a floor cloth make sure to seal it with several coats of polyurethane.

Get those bandanas out, any old cowboy boots, some rope and brown felt or chamois cloth from your husband’s car cleaning kit (or purchase it new at the car parts store). Use for fringe on pillows or bedspreads.

You can tie off curtains with the bandanas or tie them in triangles across the top of the windows as “toppers,” sew them together and stuff for pillows, Tie them on the bedposts or around a lamp base. Use fabric adhesive and use them to cover lamp shades.

Roping can be swagged across the curtain rods or used to hang the bandanas from a curtain topper.

Use old boots to hold magazines or stick them on the legs of the bed. Throw an old cowboy hat (garage sale or costume area in Party Store) on the bedpost or chair back and you’re on your way to a great look.

Take a Letter

An easy, charming way to make a border around a room is to use press on on letters. You decide on the phrase you want to use, stick the letters on and paint over them. Use masking tape to create the bottom edge.

For instance, in a child’s room you may want to do “Once Upon A Time” or the words to a favorite song or fairly tale. In other areas of the house you can use French sayings or even something from the Bible.

The other alternative is to just buy the letters and press them on and leave them. Either way it’s attractive and easy to do.

Stamp Out Dull Rooms

You can buy plain solid colored sheets for your kid’s room and stamp them using fabric paint. You can do a cat’s paw print as a border all around the edge of the pillowcase and top edge of sheet (I’ve seen this in Spiegel’s catalog for almost $100. a set). Stamps are available in any craft store and you could do footballs, fish, whatever suits your theme.

The Blackboard Jungle

You can purchase spray on chalkboard (Krylon $4.99/can) at Michaels, Jo Anns or any craft store and probably Home Depot too. Spray this on a wall or a closet door and it gives kids a place to scribble and draw. You could also paint a toy chest with it, or the top of one of those cheap plastic side tables that are used outdoors.
