How To Shorten A Mini Blind

Fitting mini blinds to your window can be a real problem for people when they purchase mini blinds from a retail store or outlet. While these blinds are usually fine for use, they often do not fit your windows. While little can be done to change width, you can adjust a mini blind to fit vertically. If you find a mini blind that fits your window width wise, but is too long, then you can shorten the mini blind to fit perfectly and do it yourself. Here is how to shorten that mini blind step by step:

blind

1. Install the mini blind in the window and unroll it fully. Once you have done this, eyeball the mini blind and see where you would like it to fall. The perfect fit is for the mini blind to sit perfectly on the window sill. Measure the mini blind and put a mark on the blind slat below the one that would make it fit perfectly. Be sure to consider the base of the mini blind as well when measuring.

2. Take the mini blind down and hang it between two chairs. You may also do this with it hanging in the window, but it is easier if you get it at a comfortable level.

3. Put the mini blind in the open position so that the slats are perfectly even and open. At the bottom of the base of the mini blind, you will notice three “buttons” that are evenly spaced. Take a screwdriver and pop these buttons off. These buttons serve to hold the cordage of the mini blind in place to keep them in place on the mini blind. (More on this later)

4. Once you pop off the buttons, you should be able to then remove the base of the mini blind leaving only loose mini blind strings in each of the three areas. Slowly and carefully remove each of the slats from the slat that you marked. This will leave considerable excess string.

5. Take the base of the mini blind and place it in the ladder of string that the marked slat was sitting in. Take note that they strings will line back up with the buttons as well.

6. Pop the buttons back into place in the same way that you found them. Take care that you keep the string even across by holding it in place with one hand, and popping the button back in place with the other.

7. Enjoy your perfect fitting mini blind!

Tip: Hold on to those old slats, and you can use them as repair slats if one gets broken in the future. You can not buy replacement slats at major retailers. You replace old slats in the same way by removing and working your way up the blind, and then replacing the slats all the way back down. If you notice, the string alternates holes on the way down through the slats.
