How to Polish Aluminum

Are you tired of seeing those dirty and dull aluminum household products? Have you always wanted to see the shiny, mirror-like gloss your aluminum coffeepots once had but you don’t know how to restore them? Is your money not enough to buy those top of the line but very expensive aluminum cleaning agents? Have you always searched for an inexpensive but effective way to polish your aluminum products? If you have then this article is definitely for you as I give you the steps on how to polish those aluminum products. All you need is a little bit of time and knowledge on how it’s properly done.

While the regular wear and tear and the accumulated dirt can make your aluminum products look dark, a little cleaning and scrubbing can go a long way in making your aluminum materials look brand new.

After you have prepared the needed materials, you can start cleaning your aluminum. Clean the aluminum with water and some regular household cleaner. Before you use the household cleaner it would be a good idea to test its reaction to the aluminum. Place a little of the household cleaner in the area of the aluminum that is less likely to be seen. Watch for any unusual reactions of the aluminum to the cleaner such as discoloration. Discontinue use of the cleaner if it has an adverse reaction to the aluminum. Look for a different cleaner if you can. It has been advised not to use baking soda and other alkali-based cleaners because they tend to cause discoloration of the aluminum. One should also not use heavy abrasives or steel wool in cleaning aluminum products.

Once you have cleaned the aluminum with the cleaning agent, you can now apply the cream of tartar. You have to make a cream of tartar solution that consists of mixing some water with the cream of tartar. Apply the cream of tartar solution to the aluminum. This will thoroughly clean your aluminum product. It is important to rinse the aluminum after putting the cream of tartar solution. After the aluminum dries, you are now ready to put the polish.

If you cannot find Nuvite or Brasso, look for other inexpensive polish that is especially designed for cleaning aluminum products. Using polish that is not for aluminum may do more harm than good to your product. Apply a small amount of polish to a soft rag. With small circular motions, apply the polish to the aluminum. Follow the direction found in the polish. You can either rinse the aluminum or let it stay for a few minutes as directed in the polish. If you are cleaning pots and pans, do not polish the inside where the food will be placed. Only polish the outside. Avoid polishing the area of the cookware that would directly come into contact with the fire. After polishing, you should dry the aluminum if you have chosen to rinse it. Remember to keep every area dry so as to avoid any spotting or streaking. If you have chosen to let it stay for a few minutes you can buff it with a soft cloth. Continue doing this until your aluminum is clean and shiny.
