bedBed bugs are insects that usually attack during the night. They are creatures that feed on human blood. It is said that bed bugs are not seen by the naked eye; however the normal bed bugs can grow at least 5mm long which is big enough to be noticeable. A bed bug known as Cimex lectularius is the most common insect found in your mattresses and beddings. They have an oval shaped body and it is usually brown or red in color. A bed bug bite is usually swollen and the affected area becomes red. In killing them you need to be persistent since it has tendency to go back after awhile.

Some say that in order to kill bed bugs you need to be able to find their source. This can be a hard task and you need to hire an expert to be able to do this. During the day, bed bugs hide in small areas like the sides of the mattress or under the floor. They creep out during the night and search for prey.

Getting rid of bed bugs:

  • Using an insecticide is the popular way of killing them. Biological and chemical are the two types of insecticide that you could use. The biological one involves living organisms to be able to kill these bugs. Don’t worry because this is safe and easy to use. Chemical insecticides on the other hand can also kill bed bugs but there are disadvantages when using it. Chemical insecticides are quite expensive and it contains toxic materials that could harm anyone who don’t know to use it.
  • Bed bugs are usually found in the mattresses or bed sheets. One way of killing them is wash these items in a very hot water. Next is to dry them at the drier machine and turn it into its highest temperature. If the item cannot tolerate heat, then an alternative way is putting it in a freezer. For bulkier items like comforter or king size mattresses, the way to do it is by sealing them in black plastic and putting them under the sun. The heat building up inside can definitely kill them. Bed bugs are affected by the temperature whether it is low or high. It is much better to subject them in low temperature to be able to kill them and their eggs. In this way, the cycle would stop.
  • Take note that bed bugs are not only found in the beddings, they can also be in the carpet, curtains and anywhere they can build their nest. Regular vacuuming is advisable so that they can be removed and will not have an opportunity to survive. You need to vacuum clean every single corner of the area so as not to miss a spot. Always clean the vacuum cleaner bags right away so that these insects will not be able to escape.
  • Chemical treatment is probably the best way to kill bed bugs. It is better to hire someone to do it because you are handling hazardous chemicals. Chemicals often target male bugs making them sterile. This method is proven to be effective but it can take awhile to see the effect.

We have done a lot of bed bug jobs here in Kansas City. It is important to mix a growth regulator with your adulticide insectide. This will sterilize the adults and prevent future hatchings. Also, we find that during inspections, bed bugs sometimes hide under tacked-down carpet next to the bed where the infestation is.
