How to Become a Plumber

Becoming a plumber may not be at the top of everyone’s to-do list, but it can actually be a quite lucrative career for the right person. It actually takes a great deal of work to become a licensed plumber, but all of the hard work does eventually pay off. Becoming a plumber takes discipline, drive and experience, and the time will fly by and you will be a licensed plumber in no time.

plumberBecoming a plumber requires at least three years of apprentice training with a licensed plumber. Aspiring plumbers will also need to have worked more than three under hours (theory work) under the supervision of a master plumber. Once these requirements are met, you are able to apply for and take the plumbers license examination.

To be eligible to take the plumbers license examination you need to be eighteen years old. The necessary skills needed to successfully pass this exam include: the ability to do plumbing work with very little to no supervision, the ability to properly estimate the cost of plumbing jobs, and the ability to read and understand plumbing documentation and technical diagrams. You will also need to have good dexterity and basic mathematical skills. You will need to be comfortable using all of the necessary tools related to plumbing and be able to perform mechanically related tasks with relative ease. You will need to have good communication skills so that you can easily relate and explain what needs to be done to your customers. You will need to be able to fill out the necessary paperwork correctly. You will need to be physically capable of performing all necessary plumbing tasks and be able to lift things that may be heavy.

These skills may seem daunting, but once you have completed your apprenticeship most of these skills will be like second nature to you. If you ever feel like you are struggling with a certain skill you should always ask the master plumber for some extra guidance. Becoming a plumber means knowing everything you need to know about the trade and being able to implement it in the real world.

Becoming a plumber can provide you with a relatively stable career, even during this tough economic period. People will always have clogged toilets, bursting pipes or troubles with their septic tank so this means that you will always have work available. As long as you have the skills, you are sure to be in demand in this field. You can choose to work independently or you can apply for employment at a commercial plumbing company. Plumbers make a pretty good salary as well so becoming a plumber is a wise career choice.

I like the idea of freedom from rage slavery relative to those who work under a boss and an organisation. I got fed up of being told what to wear, when to shave, how to sit, when to arrive, when to leave, when to take holidays, when not to take holidays, when to eat……. The work place is a dictatorship. If ii am going to work hard i’ll do it my way! Nice lil article. I cant wait to start my training.
