Cooling A Home With No Air Conditioning

Summer heat is one thing that is no joke, and it can be dangerous if you live in a home with no air conditioning. If you do not have air conditioning, then you need to make certain that you know how to cool off both yourself, and your home to the best of your ability. Fortunately, there are some methods of cooling your home that do not require an air conditioner. Here are a number of ways to beat the heat, and cool off your home without air conditioning:

Window Fans - Of all the items on this list, this one is easily the best option. Window fans are a wonderful method of cooling your home off if you do not have air conditioning. Make sure that you purchase a decent one that has some size to it, and that you place it in a room that will reach the largest number of windows that can be opened. Window fans take and pull air in from all the windows in the house and this creates a nice breeze. For a truly effective window fan, you need to get one that is as large as the average sized window. The small ones do work, but not on a large scale. You will need at least one window fan for each floor of the home.

Ice Fans - If you want some immediate relief from the heat in your home, nothing works as quickly as an ice fan. This involves taking a large cookie sheet and stacking it as high as you can with ice. Once you have the ice stacked, you should then find a way to catch the water run off as the ice melts. This is important for a number of reasons, and being electrocuted is chief among them. You need to make absolutely certain that the water will not puddle as it melts. Use a larger pot if you can not figure a way to catch the run off. Once you have these items, then place the ice in front of a fan about two feet away. This will cause the air to blow over the ice and cool the immediate area. Again, make sure their are no electrical risks around before attempting this.

Wet T-Shirts - Though this is known as Spring Break tradition, the truth is it is highly effective at cooling the body. Wet a t-shirt with lukewarm water, and then put the shirt on. Do not use really cold water or you will shock your system. Lukewarm water will do the trick just as well.

Cooling collars - These neat little devices are built to cool you. They are little collars that you wrap around your neck that are cool to the touch. By placing them around your neck, your brain cools off much quicker. If you need to make one, simply wet a bandanna or any piece of cloth for the same effect.

Finally, and most importantly, you should drink plenty of water to cool your system. Never try to go without water when you do not have air conditioning. The temperatures do not have to be sky high for your body to respond unfavorably to a lack of water. Drink plenty of liquids.

When it comes to cooling your home without air conditioning, it really comes down to your own creativity and effort. There are ways to cool your home, as mentioned above, but you have to make the effort. If one of these methods do not work, then try another. Anything that circulates air around your home will be beneficial. Take the time to try several different methods, and stick with the one that cools the house most effectively.

Putting some clothes in the freezer is always a nice way to cool down too. Just make sure not to put the wet t-shirt in the freezer!

If it gets too hot though, it can be dangerous to not have A/C. Keep windows and doors open for good circulation, box fans will also help with this. Window air conditioners and portable air conditioners are always an option in homes that have no central AC.

Also, like you said Rodney, staying hydrated is important. Even if you have A/C, make sure to drink lots of water if you spend time outside in the heat.
