Babywearing Benefits: Does It Really Help Your Child?

Babywearing……. Hmmm! Never heard of it? I hadn’t either! But after having a really fussy baby about a year and so back, I thought there was nothing I had not learnt about raising a really colicky child. Constantly carrying a crying baby, while trying to finish a daily routine, can be really wearying on the body and mind. But then I started using a baby pouch to carry the little rug rat around to reassure him that mommy was always around and not abandoning him. And guess what that’s exactly the babywearing means!

babywearingParents are very much aware of the fact that no matter how much time you want to spend with your newborn baby, there are always responsibilities and older children to take care of. Many Asian cultures encourage the behavior of mothers carrying their children around their bodies in slings or carry pouches. Initially it was thought that carrying a child everywhere would cause a child to be emotionally and physically dependent on parents, but the opposite seems to be true with babies in carriers very rarely going on crying jags and being much more developed and intelligent due to the constant interaction they have while with the mother.

A study carried out in North America also stated that fussy or colicky children cried less when babies cried less when parents rocked or carried them around for several additional hours every day. There are several babywearing benefits and a few are:

  • When you are wearing your child up front, they are more likely to get a better view of what you are doing and they find any type of action interesting. You can peel potatoes, knead dough and cook while having your child in a back pack arrangement. As a result babies feel as they are a part of your work and are less likely to constantly demand your attention.
  • Baby slings are very comfortable when you have a second child who demands your attention. You can carry your child in a back pack or sling and still carry on playing with your toddler at the garden or finish off a puzzle.
  • Babies crave attention and being placed so close to parents encourages their growth and physical development. It also creates the feeling of a temporary womb as they can hear the mothers breathing, her heartbeat, and feel her movements which stimulates his vestibular system.
  • Sling babies cry less and learn more. In several Asian countries ,the normal practice is of new born babies being carried by mothers everywhere and put down to sleep with mothers. In fact when mothers are not holding children, the newborns are being carried by others till the mother gets back. These babies are reassured by the prescience of parents close by and are more likely to pay attention to their surroundings and thus grow up to be much more observant and intelligent.

Babywearing is also very useful for mothers who breastfeed. You can immediately pick up cues then your child becomes hungry and then breast feed without any problem.
