What Are Defensive Sprays?

Defensive sprays have become popular with both law enforcement and the general public in recent years because they have the ability to disable a person without permanent damage. They are designed to cause severe discomfort, which renders an assailant unable to concentrate on anything but his pain. This can be very effective in subduing or escaping an attacker . . . if everything goes right.

To understand the capabilities and limitations of defensive sprays, it is important to understand what is available, what they’re designed to do, and how they work. There are two basic ingredients used in defensive sprays today. The less-common type is tear gas. Tear gas causes profuse tearing and an intense burning sensation in the eyes. This disorients the attacker, and makes it very difficult to do anything but seek relief.

pepper sprayThe more popular type is commonly called pepper spray. Pepper spray is an agent, carried routinely by many police departments, designed to be an extreme and immediate irritant to the eyes, but without permanent effect. It causes the eyelids to close tightly. This involuntary reaction is almost impossible to wilfully reverse, so an assailant is unable to see, while also distracted by severe irritation and burning. Pepper spray is made of 10%, 15% or 17% Oleo Capsicum Pepper, depending on what you buy. This is also known as food-grade red pepper. Most common types are 10%. Some, mostly animal repellent sprays, have an even higher concentration. Additionally, the state of Michigan has laws regarding the formulation of pepper sprays. If you live there, you should be sure to get a “Michigan formula”.

There are many formulas available now that combine pepper spray with tear gas. This is very effective. In addition, many are now including UV dye, which marks an assailant and often helps in identifying him if apprehended. Sprays are also available in a foaming formula, which is designed to stay in place, and make the assailant’s problem worse if he tries to wipe it off.

Police have found pepper spray to be highly effective at instantly subduing most perpetrators. Few people can think about anything except the severe pain in their eyes once hit with the spray. Occasionally, however, a particularly tough, drunk, or high-on-drugs assailant can almost completely ignore the effects of the spray. This is unusual, though.

As with any self-protection product, defensive sprays are not perfect. Although they are very effective if everything works right, problems arise in the practical use of them. First of all, they are often carried for months or years on a keychain or in a glove compartment, and they become an unnoticed part of a person’s landscape. If a crisis arises, people often forget that they even have them. Many are not that user-friendly; they have to be uncapped and pointed in the right direction, and many require a surprisingly strong finger to deploy the agent.

Another problem is that you have to aim properly and actually hit the assailant in the eyes. Anything else will not do, and will probably make your situation worse. If you miss your assailant’s eyes on the first try, you won’t get a second chance and it may well be used on you. This is pepper spray’s biggest drawback in common use.

Finally, defensive sprays have to be used preemptively, meaning that they are of little use in close quarters and a decision has to be made to use them before things get that far.

Before deciding to rely on a defensive spray, you should consider your personality. Are you cool enough in a crisis to use it, or even remember you have it? Are you decisive enough to use the spray before things get too far? If not, there is no point in carrying it. A personal alarm might be a better choice.

On the other hand, these sprays have saved a lot of lives, both of potential victims and of assailants. They are instantly effective on most people, they are safe to use, and will not cause permanent harm to anyone, including children. Only you can decide if carrying one is right for you.

How to Feed Your Baby

Feeding your baby the right food and the right way can seem quite complicated and confusing at first, especially to new parents. During the different stages of your baby’s development, there are corresponding ways and kinds of food that you can feed your baby.

During your child’s first four months, you should be feeding them only breast milk or formula. Your newborn baby will probably want to be fed from 8 to 15 times a day, or at least every two to three hours. You will know that your baby is being fed enough if he’s gaining an ounce a day by his fifth day after birth. This will go on until he is at least 3 months of age. Solid food is still off limits at this stage, as your baby’s digestive track is still in its developing phase.

feed a babyBy the time that your baby reaches four months old you should still be feeding them breast milk or formula. However, along with this you should also feed semi-liquid iron-fortified rice cereal and move on to other grain cereals later on. You should start by feeding your baby 1 teaspoon of dry rice cereal mixed with around 4 or 5 teaspoons of milk. It should be very runny as your baby is still getting accustomed to a thicker consistency. Slowly increase the thickness of this consistency. Your baby may not want to eat the cereal on the first try. If that happens, try doing this again a few days later.

When your baby reaches the age of 6 months you can start adding to their menu pureed or strained fruits like banana, applesauce, and peaches. You can also feed your baby pureed or strained vegetables like avocado, cooked carrots, and sweet potato. Your baby is probably ready for solid food if he can hold his head up, make chewing motions, and show interest in food. Other signs are if your baby sits well in a high chair, moves their tongue back and forth and is starting to teeth. You should introduce new foods to your baby one at a time, with at least three days in between. This is to ensure that your baby is not allergic to the food that you feed.

At 8 months your baby is probably ready to eat mashed fruits and vegetables (pears, avocados, squash, and potatoes) along with finger foods (well-cooked spiral pasta, crackers, low-sugar o-shaped cereal), small amounts of protein (pureed meats, beans, split peas), and non-citrus juice. You can tell if your baby is ready for finger foods if they can move objects from one hand to the other and can pick up items with their thumb and forefinger.

Finally from an age of 10 months to 12 months, your baby can start eating more solid foods. Along with breast milk or formula and the previously mentioned foods, your baby can start eating more kinds of food like combo foods, fruit cut into cubes, yogurt, protein, and more finger foods. Also you should keep in mind that you shouldn’t feed your baby cow’s milk until they reach at least a year old.

Feeding your baby may be confusing at first, but with the right amount of care and knowledge, it can end up being an enjoyable and successful learning process.

Knowing How to Get Rid of Fleas Effectively

One of the most annoying things we often face is those cruel fleas. They are found on the hardest to reach areas and they are often hard to put out. Aside from residing at the deepest and most hard to target places, fleas also make pets their unwilling home. An example would be an itching cat or a dog. Aside from being parasites on their own, fleas are also capable of spreading of other fellow parasites such as tapeworms. So no matter how much we want to simply ignore them, we can’t because they can really start the surge of different diseases.

exterminatorFleas often reside in beddings, carpets, and other soft areas where they can easily hide away from light exposure and protect themselves from other physical factors. They often lay thousands of eggs, and the cold and dark conditions provided by their chosen homes help make the hatching process move faster and also host the growing fleas until such time that they can finally do some serious pestering. Because the eggs are very miniscule, it is very hard to get rid of it. Usually, people just find out about them when diseases related to fleas or itching already occurs.

But this does not mean that they cannot be eliminated. There are useful ways in which fleas can be removed as soon as they infest pets and even humans.

1. A person who is currently being pestered with fleas is recommended to take a bath at a minimum of two times per day. Germ killing soaps should also be used instead of regular ones to coat the skin with effective yet gentle chemicals which can kill these fleas currently residing on the skin. When it comes to flea infested pets, you can clean them once a day using pet formulated germ killing soaps. You will not find it hard to find such things because pet stores sell them.

2. Flea combs can also be used. This is often used right after taking a bath since it will be able to pick up dead fleas which have been extinguished through the use of germ killing soaps and shampoos. Flea combs are used just like regular combs are, but they must be combed on all the areas of the hair and rather gently. Flea combs are easily available in medical stores and are characterized by smaller bristles which are set closer together as compared with the usual combs and brushes. There are also specific flea combs which can be used specifically for pets.

3. Beddings should be replaced on a regular basis. This ensures that any other fleas which may have been transferred onto the sheets are removed, and never go back on the person. Upon removing of these beddings, pillow covers, and sheets, it is advisable to submerge them into lukewarm water before washing them off. The lukewarm water will help minimize the fleas which may already be residing in these items. You can also use anti-bacterial soaps to make sure that the remaining fleas and eggs are also eliminated upon washing.
