  • Put all medicines and medical supplies in a cabinet with a child safety lock.
  • Lock away all dangerous items in a cabinet with a child safety lock, including cosmetics, which are also potentially dangerous.
  • Install a carbon monoxide detector near all bedrooms.

Safety from drowning: Drowning is something that can happen very fast, so it is important that you can prevent drowning in your home in every way possible.

  • Stay within arm’s reach of young children whenever they are in the tub.
  • Don’t allow other children to baby-sit children when near water.
  • Use toilet lid locks.
  • Keep large buckets turned over to prevent water from collecting inside them.

Safety from falling:

  • Install safety gates at the tops and bottoms of stairs.
  • Install window guards on windows on the upper levels of your home.
  • Make sure all cribs, beds, and other furniture are away from any windows.
  • Always properly put away step stools and ladders after use.

The safety of your home for your children is your responsibility. Although it takes an extra amount of effort, every bit is worth it.

How to Feed Your Baby

Feeding your baby the right food and the right way can seem quite complicated and confusing at first, especially to new parents. During the different stages of your baby’s development, there are corresponding ways and kinds of food that you can feed your baby.

During your child’s first four months, you should be feeding them only breast milk or formula. Your newborn baby will probably want to be fed from 8 to 15 times a day, or at least every two to three hours. You will know that your baby is being fed enough if he’s gaining an ounce a day by his fifth day after birth. This will go on until he is at least 3 months of age. Solid food is still off limits at this stage, as your baby’s digestive track is still in its developing phase.

feed a babyBy the time that your baby reaches four months old you should still be feeding them breast milk or formula. However, along with this you should also feed semi-liquid iron-fortified rice cereal and move on to other grain cereals later on. You should start by feeding your baby 1 teaspoon of dry rice cereal mixed with around 4 or 5 teaspoons of milk. It should be very runny as your baby is still getting accustomed to a thicker consistency. Slowly increase the thickness of this consistency. Your baby may not want to eat the cereal on the first try. If that happens, try doing this again a few days later.

When your baby reaches the age of 6 months you can start adding to their menu pureed or strained fruits like banana, applesauce, and peaches. You can also feed your baby pureed or strained vegetables like avocado, cooked carrots, and sweet potato. Your baby is probably ready for solid food if he can hold his head up, make chewing motions, and show interest in food. Other signs are if your baby sits well in a high chair, moves their tongue back and forth and is starting to teeth. You should introduce new foods to your baby one at a time, with at least three days in between. This is to ensure that your baby is not allergic to the food that you feed.

At 8 months your baby is probably ready to eat mashed fruits and vegetables (pears, avocados, squash, and potatoes) along with finger foods (well-cooked spiral pasta, crackers, low-sugar o-shaped cereal), small amounts of protein (pureed meats, beans, split peas), and non-citrus juice. You can tell if your baby is ready for finger foods if they can move objects from one hand to the other and can pick up items with their thumb and forefinger.

Finally from an age of 10 months to 12 months, your baby can start eating more solid foods. Along with breast milk or formula and the previously mentioned foods, your baby can start eating more kinds of food like combo foods, fruit cut into cubes, yogurt, protein, and more finger foods. Also you should keep in mind that you shouldn’t feed your baby cow’s milk until they reach at least a year old.

Feeding your baby may be confusing at first, but with the right amount of care and knowledge, it can end up being an enjoyable and successful learning process.

Knowing How to Get Rid of Fleas Effectively

One of the most annoying things we often face is those cruel fleas. They are found on the hardest to reach areas and they are often hard to put out. Aside from residing at the deepest and most hard to target places, fleas also make pets their unwilling home. An example would be an itching cat or a dog. Aside from being parasites on their own, fleas are also capable of spreading of other fellow parasites such as tapeworms. So no matter how much we want to simply ignore them, we can’t because they can really start the surge of different diseases.

exterminatorFleas often reside in beddings, carpets, and other soft areas where they can easily hide away from light exposure and protect themselves from other physical factors. They often lay thousands of eggs, and the cold and dark conditions provided by their chosen homes help make the hatching process move faster and also host the growing fleas until such time that they can finally do some serious pestering. Because the eggs are very miniscule, it is very hard to get rid of it. Usually, people just find out about them when diseases related to fleas or itching already occurs.

But this does not mean that they cannot be eliminated. There are useful ways in which fleas can be removed as soon as they infest pets and even humans.

1. A person who is currently being pestered with fleas is recommended to take a bath at a minimum of two times per day. Germ killing soaps should also be used instead of regular ones to coat the skin with effective yet gentle chemicals which can kill these fleas currently residing on the skin. When it comes to flea infested pets, you can clean them once a day using pet formulated germ killing soaps. You will not find it hard to find such things because pet stores sell them.

2. Flea combs can also be used. This is often used right after taking a bath since it will be able to pick up dead fleas which have been extinguished through the use of germ killing soaps and shampoos. Flea combs are used just like regular combs are, but they must be combed on all the areas of the hair and rather gently. Flea combs are easily available in medical stores and are characterized by smaller bristles which are set closer together as compared with the usual combs and brushes. There are also specific flea combs which can be used specifically for pets.

3. Beddings should be replaced on a regular basis. This ensures that any other fleas which may have been transferred onto the sheets are removed, and never go back on the person. Upon removing of these beddings, pillow covers, and sheets, it is advisable to submerge them into lukewarm water before washing them off. The lukewarm water will help minimize the fleas which may already be residing in these items. You can also use anti-bacterial soaps to make sure that the remaining fleas and eggs are also eliminated upon washing.

Solar Power Your Home

One of the woes that everyone thinks of every month is the recurring electric bill. Our electronic bill continuously rises every year and it doesn’t have any plans to stop or be reduced. In different parts of the country, the run for an alternative and free energy is always there. It has even become a million dollar industry because developers of free, recyclable energy earns money while helping the earth live a day longer.

One of the most popular sources of energy is solar. In various states, especially in California, it has become a trend to real estate developers to offer solar panels as part of the deal. There are even laws passed supporting this bill not only in this state but also in the whole country.

Running your home through the power of the sun is easier today. Companies are popping out of nowhere offering this type of technology. But before you go ahead and spend money to solar power your home, here are some information about the solar power and its capacity.

The first thing you have to remember about solar energy is that it cannot fully support your current energy consumption. That doesn’t mean you have to cut off some of the appliances that you currently use. Solar power requires you to have everything to be efficient. You have to insulate and seal your house properly. Energy hogs should be replaced with energy efficient appliances. Energy efficient appliances are a little bit expensive compared to energy hogs, but if you think big, you’ll be saving a lot in the near future.

Now that you have set your home to be energy efficient, it’s time to load up the solar energy devices. There are three basic components that you’ll find in your solar power pack: the solar panel, inverters and battery.

The solar panel is the most important and the most expensive of the parts. These solar panels are composed of photovoltaic cells which are semi-conductors. These semi-conductors have the ability to convert the light of the sun into energy. The energy collected from these panels is in the form of DC or direct current energy. However, DC power doesn’t run in our appliances. We need AC or alternating current.

Which brings us to the next part of the solar energy pack: the inverter. Inverter is a common electronic device that converts DC to AC. The solar power inverters are created to be very efficient in converting almost all DC energy to AC so that power accumulated will not be spilled.

The last gadget in the solar power technology is the battery. This is just common sense since the sun doesn’t shine for 24 hours. When the accumulated solar energy is in excess, it goes to the battery so that it could be used at night.

As of this writing, many real estate developers offer solar power energy as part of the house plan. These houses are fully insulated and strategically placed in an environment where you’ll be able to have the full power of the sun. If you’re thinking of buying a home, now is the right time to invest in this type of energy and save power in the long run.

Hate Yard-Work? Get a Robot To Do It!

Some people love messing around in the yard, doing all the hands-on dirty work to ensure the drains and gutters are clean, well-maintained, and the envy of the entire neighborhood. And then there’s the rest of us…

For those who would rather have root canal that risk the inevitable dirty fingernails of toiling in drains or gutters, there’s now the IRobot Corporation’s “Looj.” The Looj is a remote-controlled robot, designed to perfectly navigate drains and gutters, while dislodging dirt and dead leaves better than any human.

looj.jpg
The Looj propels itself forwards and backwards on a track-like apparatus, similar to that used by bulldozers or military tanks. As well as being waterproof at levels up to 1 foot deep, the Looj can clean the nastiest of gutters quicker than any human. IRobot claims that the Looj can clean a 60 foot length of standard home gutter in less than 10 minutes! Compare that to the time it takes to clean gutters by hand, constantly repositioning ladders, and more than likely, winding up covered with dead leaves, dirt and water.

Robotic tools are becoming more and more widespread these days. It hasn’t been very many years ago that the first “real life” household assistant robot was introduced. Of course, I’m talking about iRobot’s other breakthrough product, the Roomba robotic vacuum cleaner. Although consumers were skeptical at first, the Roomba caught on with time, spurring a host of imitators. The success of the Roomba has researchers at work in laboratories around the world, searching for new and innovative “bots” to do the dirty work we humans would rather avoid.

The Looj is just the latest of these robotic servants, and you can expect to see many more appearing in the near future. IRobot is currently expanding their product line to include wall cleaners, industrial vacuums, and other time-saving robotic “engineers.” The company has been on the forefront of the home robotic movement, but now new companies are getting in on the act, and it seems inevitable that there will soon be “a robot in every home.”

While the Looj is not likely to eliminate yard-work as we know it, many business analysts see it as a first step toward the “robotization” of the family home. Up until the last decade, robots had been primarily used by governments and military organizations around the world. For example, the South Korean government is currently planning to deploy robots to secure its border with neighboring North Korea.

But in just a few years time, you will probably be more likely to find robots at work in and around your home, than on the front lines. Love them or hate them, it appears that robots are slowly but surely becoming a necessary part of our culture.

Ergonomic Office

When we say ergonomic, we sometimes think of an office that’s chic and very appealing to the eyes with beautiful colors and swivel chairs that will make you feel really comfortable. That may be correct in some way. But being ergonomic doesn’t necessarily mean that the room will really look good. In a working environment, ergonomics can contribute to increasing the productivity of your employees. The premise of being productive comes from the idea that your personnel needs to feel good about the way work is done. But going extreme with this concept is not too good either, since a very comfortable chair can work like a bed and your employees will have a great time sitting on their chairs – sleeping.

Being ergonomic doesn’t really have to be that expensive. If you’re just starting in your business, it’s the perfect time to purchase office furniture that complements the body of your employees. We’ll numerate some of the furniture and objects that you can purchase and how they will affect your employee’s work. We’ll assume that your office will have computers just like most of the businesses that we see nowadays.

We start of course with the chair. You employee will use that more than half of their time working for you. So for that chair to be ergonomic, you have to look for something that will complement the height of your employees, as well as support their back comfortably. Since our height varies greatly, we need to have something adjustable. There are lots of chair in the market that can easily adjust to the height of a sitting person. If you can find something made of mesh the sitting experience will even make it better.

Office tables are important furniture that should be ergonomic. Just like the chairs, they should also be adjustable. The work surface should also be adjusted along with the tables and the chairs.

Next, office computers. As most of your employees will be staring at the monitors all day during all week days, your screen should not hurt the eyes of the customers in any way . If you can’t afford to have an LCD in your computer, you should have at least a screen protector to protect the eyes from too much strain. Most will refer to it as glare protection and it will really help protecting the eyes of your employees.

There are also other products that you can consider for your office. Forearm support for your chair is important as the arms will be actively moved most of the time and the support will prevent the arms from being continuously strained. Keyboard trays should also have the swivel support where you can adjust the keyboard to your level in any position. Footrests should also be a nice addition especially when the office is too stiff. A good relaxing rest for the feet is really a life saver for your employee.

These are the things that you can consider adding to your office. If you want your office to be livelier and more productive, these simple things can definitely help.

Furniture Fashion Forecasts of 2007

The home is the best reflection of one’s tastes and personal preferences. As such, it should never remain stale or outdated. Of course, yearly home renovations may prove to be too ostentatious, not to mention overtly expensive. Instead, one must rely on the next best thing when it comes to reinventing their much won places. It’s time to re-furnish and to reinvigorate that home by choosing only the finest tables, chairs, couches, cabinets, drawers and all other sorts of furniture, in accordance to this 2007 furniture forecast.

Contrary to the modernity that one would usually expect of 2007, this year’s furniture trend actually leans on the natural look. It has a keeling towards furniture that exude a back-to nature feel, in order to counter flow the increasingly popular metallic and minimalist choices of 2006.

Kicking off the 2007 furniture forecast are handcrafted items. These are handcrafted furniture pieces that boast detail and dexterity in every inch. Some items under this category include detailed flower baskets for centerpieces and woven curtains and curtain holders. Handmade shell curtains are also very trendy this year.

As for the major furniture like couches and chairs, leather lined fabric will work best. The mixture of leather and fabric will be a compromise between utter coziness and strict business. To make leather seamed fabric upholstery trendier, it is advised to pick colors which may be defined as nude shades and pale pastels. Some of the most popular choices are tan, and aged rose. White will also be a very safe and lasting choice based on 2007’s trends.

The ethnic colors will also work for breaking the monotonously fashionable shades of sand and tans. Ethnic colors mostly comprise of bright reds and deep blues. They may be used to accent furniture just to add up flavor to the room or the house as a whole. Some may turn to woven table covers and pillow cases. However, one must put in mind that these are just additional flavors of the room’s design. They must never dominate the whole concept and structure of any given space.

Cultural diversity is also a great theme to work on when it comes to designing the living rooms of 2007. Picking a piece from various areas like Africa, America and Asia. After that, it is time to start putting them all together in one room will be perfect. Tiki vases, African dolls and even tropical ornaments will surely be welcome in your neutrally colored rooms. This is the primary purpose of picking weakly colored pieces. The paleness will serve as canvasses that may accommodate extreme ornamentation and free expression that will blow everyone’s mind away.

To further redefine that homey feel, it is also suggested that the person who lives in the house contribute to the aesthetics of the rooms. Therefore personal art and expression is always welcome. From simple clay artworks to paintings, all that a person’s got to do is say yes to the artistic challenges. In any case that no artistic juices are excreted, one can always make his or her own mark by putting pictures of them selves and loved ones. After all, life is an art and putting them in hardwood frames and related raw materials definitely count as means of expression.

Counter-height dining sets will also make a comeback, as well as counter height cabinets and other furniture. This will bring some spunk into any space by adapting the informal elegance that the modern world enjoys. Fancy candelabras and crystal chandeliers must also be replaced by something more natural such as accessories made of wood, shells and stone. To further compliment the whole nude colored back to nature feel of the home, one may also opt to add indoor landscapes, mini fountains and even ambient environmental sounds.

With these tips in mind, anyone’s 2007 home will be as lovely as can be. All it takes is a little imagination and the will to express one’s homebound artistry. After that, a year of living in the coziest and most aesthetically pleasing home will lie ahead for the wise and fashionable homeowner. Indeed, making the home a mirror of personal tastes and preferences is as easy as 1-2-3.

Gardening Tips on Bonsai Tree Growing

Bonsai growing continues to get a lot of attention from gardeners all over the world. After all, it’s not everyday that you get to plant trees in containers. Believe it or not, a bonsai is not genetically enhanced. But rather, its size is constrained through the use of natural methods such as confining it in a pot. And this is why growing a bonsai is entirely different.

How to Make Your Bonsai Tree Grow

Growing bonsai is considered to be an artistic form. It’s a process that takes a while to learn. The first step is to learn how to minimize the size of the tree. This is done by pruning and wiring the parts of the tree carefully. Remember, you’re trying to constrict the size of the tree into the shape you desire. But you’ll still want it to look like a matured tree when it grows.

Shaping the tree is a continuous process. In fact, you have to look after the tree from the start. A copper wire is good enough to use for the wiring. Carefully wire the branches with the trunk to get the desired shape you want. It’s important as well to keep the tree proportional. Make sure also that you’re using a container that’s the right size.

There is actually a type of soil that’s used specifically for bonsai trees. It dries out much faster compared to conventional soil. But you must only place a small amount of this in the container. As a result, you have to water the bonsai tree often. Be careful though since you might end up pouring too much water on the roots. A good brand of fertilizer also helps your bonsai tree grow beautifully.

Good humidity is another factor that contributes to the health of your bonsai tree. Pour a little water in your container to maintain the dampness. It also helps if your bonsai tree is getting enough sunlight. Take note that bonsai trees are not really suited for indoors. Full sunlight is the best, but filtering a little of it is sufficient enough.

Changing your bonsai tree’s container from time to time is essential as well. This is especially important when your tree is still young. It is done to help the tree absorb more water and encourage further growth.

Choosing Your First Tree

Here are some choices for beginners in bonsai tree growing:

  • Japanese White Pine. It grows quite slowly compared to other types. But in full maturity, it is very broad and tall as well. Full sunlight is highly recommended to help achieve maximum growth.
  • Japanese Pagoda. A very good choice for beginners since it is relatively small. As a result, it’s quite easy to shape. Full or filtered sunlight will do just fine for this tree. However, it’s vulnerable to very hot temperatures and cold winter.
  • Green Mound Chinese Juniper. Many gardeners consider this as a standard choice for beginners. It grows slowly but is very easy to take care of. Shaping this tree is also easier than most types.
  • Trident Maple. A more challenging choice compared to the rest. It does well in filtered or full sunlight. The roots of this tree grow quite fast. Constant watering is required.
  • Chinese Quince. It is one of the longest living bonsai trees. Durability is also another plus factor. This tree is best suited outdoors. As it continues to grow, it becomes more and more attractive.

Where to Buy Bonsai Trees

The internet is a great choice. You’ll find many sites that offer good quality trees at great prices. Some retailers immediately give you a discount for buying more than one tree. Just be careful in choosing a dealer. Remember, there are a lot of bonsai tree companies out there who are up to no good.

Another way to save money is to approach wholesale growers. Most of the time, you’ll find many trees here that are of high quality. In addition, wholesale growers usually give you a complete set of instructions in taking care of your tree. Some even have great online services that you can avail of. Among these is online ordering and same day shipping. But the biggest advantage of this option is the guarantee of their services and products.

Things to Remember Before Buying Your First Home

You can make your home buying time a whole lot easier if you are prepared. The key to making it easy is to have a plan from the start and to keep the plan through the end. While many people want to buy a home or invest in new property, few people know exactly where to start. In this article, I will consider things that you need to do in order to make home buying easy on you and all of those who are working with you.

Before you can buy a home, you are going to need some money, right? Get yourself pre-approved for a loan that you might receive. This is a good way to figure out how much money you will be working with and what type of home you might be able to afford. When you finalize the sales contract for the home, you will need to know what type of loan you are receiving. While you may not be able to get an exact quote on your loan, the lender will probably be able to give you an estimate of what sort of loan you might be able to obtain. Getting pre-approved is a good way to make your offer that much stronger to the seller. If your offer is not the only one, it is a good way to make your offer stand out from the crowd.

Once you get the pre-approved loan, you will need to start thinking about the type of home which you will want. You are the only person who knows the things which you would enjoy in a home. Is there something that you absolutely must have in your home like a fireplace or an extra-large master bathroom? Do you want to add any extras like a swimming pool to your property? These are all questions to consider. In addition to that, you will have to know what type of home you are looking for in regards to the age of the home. Do you want a new home or something that is more of a project fixer-upper? Do you have the time or desire to do some work to the home once you buy it? When you answer these questions, you will be able to pinpoint the homes that you are looking for.

Be assertive in your home search. Good homes are not just going to approach you and introduce themselves. Go out and find it. Do a little bit of research and find a real estate agent who is willing to put in similar work. Choose only one agent, though, as many agents will likely just complicate things. Look for an agent with a good reputation in the community. A real estate agent with good relationships within the business is something that is essential. If you do not have the time to do any of the work for yourself, then make sure that your real estate agent is one who handles all areas of home buying.

Once you have done these things, it is time to go looking. Drive by some homes and check them out from the outside. Attend open house home meetings and plan times to take a private tour. Figure out if the neighborhoods where you are looking will fit your family’s needs. These are the important questions that you must answer.

You must always be ready to make an offer for a home. The home-buying business is one of quick action. Keep with you a copy of your loan approval and always have a price in mind. You should also keep in your mind a backup plan in case things do not go well. One thing to make sure that you do is to make a fair offer the first time. Do not expect the seller to accept an offer that you would never accept. If your first offer is on par with the seller’s wants, then your negotiations will be much smoother.

Organic Pest Control For Your Garden

Whether or not you are an experienced gardener, I’m pretty sure that your health and surrounding is your utmost concern. It’s but yet normal to sense suspicion with the use of chemical pesticides on your lawn and garden. As luck would have it, several plant experts have now devised a mass of successful practice and natural merchandise on the market that would help you take care of the pests invading your garden without any threat of chemical effects.

Organic pest control in the same way as agriculture started since time immemorial. It initially dealt with moles, voles, deer, groundhogs, rabbits, other garden pests. Insects are level-headedly all-pervading garden pests, inflicting unutterable destruction on landscapes and plants. Who won’t want to eradicate them? I’m very sure a unison voice would be yielded. With our haste to wipe them out, however, we often spoil the ones beneficial for us, due to the nature of pesticide in killing or otherwise adversely affecting living organism which includes the gardener himself. Moreover, synthetic pesticide chemicals have across-the-board ecological effect.

Thus, the action has been interrelated to the vast decline of agents of pollination. This is where the natural alternative sets in. Although it has been evidently time consuming, the benefits that we’d be able to draw from it as compared to the harm caused by pesticides is rather satisfying.

Naturally alternative

Grubs, beetles or roaches swarming around your lawn and inside your house would drag you to a wider perspective of the ecosystem image, more importantly when you decide to settle for an organic pest control system. Your aim would definitely cover the elimination of destructive pests while at the same time attracting the natural predators to produce healthy and irrepressible plants.

First to do is to adjust the proper arrangement of your plants habitat. Insects don’t usually pop out from somewhere and suddenly invade and cause irreparable havoc for no reason at all. They have chosen your lawn for reasons like we humans consider when choosing a new settlement, we make sure that it would provide us the basic needs for our sustenance. So to get rid of them, simply don’t feed their needs but instead deprive them of its presence in your lawn.

Second, turn to repulsiveness. It would really be unusual for a gardener to welcome these pests. So upon discovering their existence it would be very pragmatic to start thinking up a plan to drive them off. Traps, barriers and deterrents are the most typical options. You might want to study effective plant-based-mixture repellents such as garlic, citrus and/or hot pepper sprays. Essential oils such as peppermint oil, tea tree oil and eucalyptus are proven effective.

Lastly, rely on predation. If not for the information in food cycles this won’t be possible. You should discover the best predators of such pests so you’d be able to at least little by little if not completely eradicate such pesky pests in your garden.
