What to Do if You Have a STD

Having a sexually transmitted disease, or STD, can be a very devastating experience. It is very scary and, for many, quite nerve wracking. If you have recently learned that you have a sexually transmitted disease, there is a good chance that you might not know exactly what to do next. Is there anything special that you will need to do, or anything that you may need to do differently? Here are some of the things that you should know about what to do if you have a STD.

Ask the Doctor

Your doctor is likely to prescribe with a treatment for the STD or some type of cream or medication to help keep the problem under control. Depending on the type of sexually transmitted disease that you have, there may or may not be a cure. Your doctor will probably provide you with a free sample to get you started, as well as a prescription that you will need to have filled at the pharmacy.

Sexual Intercourse

One of the most important things that you should know about sexual health is that it is never okay to have unprotected sexual intercourse with a STD. Always use condoms with your partner, and remember that you should always let them know that you have a STD prior to sex. There are certain STDs which can cause you to experience reoccurring outbreaks, such as herpes. If you have one of these STDs, it is best to refrain from having sexual intercourse when you are experiencing an outbreak. This is when your sex partner is most likely to catch the sexually transmitted disease from you.

Tell Past Sex Partners

Anyone who has taken a sexual education course probably knows that it’s important for STDs to be diagnosed early on. This means that you should notify past sex partners about the fact that you have a sexually transmitted disease. This will allow the opportunity to get checked. If you do not feel comfortable about telling them yourself, you may want to have your doctor contact them and let them know that one of their sex partners has been diagnosed with a STD. Anything that you can do to encourage them to get tested is best.

Dating in the Future

Keep in mind that it is a crime to have sexual intercourse without telling future sex partners about a STD if you know about it. This is especially true about HIV or AIDS. It also should not have a huge impact on dating in the future. While many will be unwilling to date someone who has a sexually transmitted disease, there are others who will be accepting of it. You may even want to consider using a dating website that is designed for those who have STDs.

Having a STD can be a very scary experience, but it is important to remember that there are many people out there who have gone through the same thing. These are just a few of the different things that you should do after learning that you have a sexually transmitted disease.
