What Causes Dandruff?

Dandruff can be an embarrassing, and often annoying, problem. In order to get rid of the problem, one of the first things that you will need to do is determine what the causes of your dandruff are. Here are some of the most common causes of dandruff.

Dry Skin

The main cause of dandruff is dry skin. Some people only experience dandruff during certain times during the year, such as winter because the air is a lot dryer. Not using enough conditioner and overusing styling tools, such as hair blow dryers and flat irons, can also cause the hair to become very dry.

Seborrheic Dermatitis

This is another one of the most common causes of dandruff. Seborrheic Dermatitis is often referred to as adult cradle crap. It is characterized by scaly flakes that can either be white or yellow. You will also notice an overabundance of grease on the skin. Seborrheic Dermatitis also usually affects the eyebrows, behind the ears, and the nose. This problem is known to be particularly difficult to get rid of.

Psoriasis

This health problem is known to be another one of the leading causes of dandruff. It causes the skin to become very dry, which ultimately leads to very thick scales. Many people with Psoriasis also notice the problem on their knees and elbows. Like Seborrheic Dermatitis, Psoriasis is known to be very difficult to get rid of.

Fungal Infections

It is also possible for a fungal infection to be the cause of your dandruff. This usually causes the skin to become more oily than it normally is, though it may seem dry due to the flaking. Generally, you will notice the problem on the forehead and behind the ears as well. Dandruff caused by fungal infections is often easier to take care of because the doctor can provide you with an anti-fungal cream.

Reactions to Products

If you have recently begun using a new hair care product and have now noticed a buildup of dandruff, the two may be related. Your skin may simply be sensitive to the problems or it may be allergic. Many people often notice dandruff when they use harsh chemicals, such as hair dyes or Japanese straightener.

Other Causes

Dandruff may occur due to a number of other causes. The most common cause is not using enough shampoo or conditioner depending on how oily or dry your skin is. Using a brush that belongs to a family member or friend with dandruff can also cause you to experience it. Continuing to use one of your own brushes that has a buildup of dandruff can cause the problem to reoccur.

Many people have a hard time getting rid of dandruff once they experience it. In order to fight the problem, you should first find out what is causing your dandruff. If you cannot easily determine what the problem is on your own, it is a good idea to consider visiting a dermatologist, who will be able to diagnose the condition for you and give you a treatment plan.
