Are You at a High Risk for Catching Swine Flu?

Certain groups of people are at a much higher risk for catching swine flu than others. These groups of people include pregnant women, anyone between the ages of 6 months and 24 years, and those between the ages of 25 and 64 who have chronic medical conditions. Also keep in mind that anyone who works in the health care industry is also at a greater risk than others of catching the swine flu. If you fall into one of those categories, then it is highly encouraged for you to get the swine flu shot. Protecting yourself and your health from being affected by the swine flu if you are at a greater risk for catching the illness is ideal.

Is it Really Necessary to Get the Swine Flu Shot?

Before making the decision to get the swine flu shot, it is important to determine whether it is really necessary for you to do so. Unless you fall into a high risk category of people, it’s unlikely that it is necessary. Many people have made the assumption that the swine flu is an epidemic, but it is important to keep in mind that the regular flu is actually known to be just as prevalent at the moment. This means that you have about an equal chance of catching the regular flu, or the swine flu. The main difference is that swine flu is common and considered to be more deadly among younger people, whereas the regular flu is known to affect children and elderly. Unless the swine flu is really spreading through your child’s school or in the workplace, you probably do not need the vaccination.

Do You Want to Risk the Potential Side Effects?

The swine flu shot is still incredibly new. What this means is that there is not yet enough information or research available to determine what the potential side effects of the swine flu vaccination are. Until this information because available after this flu season or even further down the road, it is hard to tell whether the swine flu shot is safe. Thus, you cannot really weigh the pros and cons associated with getting this vaccination yet. Knowing that you may be at risk is important to remember.

The decision to get the swine flu shot is going to be your own. It is not required, and many experts do not believe that it is necessary. Taking all of the above factors into consideration prior to getting the swine flu vaccination is in your best interest. Whether you make the decision to get the shot or not, the most important thing is to avoid getting the swine flu vaccination without putting much thought into it.
