Making a Healthy Fruit Salad: Fruits To Include

Summer is a perfect time for fruit salad. The obvious reason is because fruit is in season during the summer. Fruit salad can also provide you with a cool, crisp snack to enjoy on a hot summer’s day. While there are many fruits that can be included in your fruit salad, not all of them will provide you with the best nutrition. Here are some of the fruits that you should be sure to add for a healthy fruit salad.

Berries

Some people include strawberries in their fruit salad, but keep in mind that all types of berries will make a great addition. Berries are rich in antioxidants, low in calories, and high in vitamins. Some of the best choices include blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, cranberries, and cherries if you don’t mind pits. The more berries that you add, the healthier that your fruit salad will be!

Watermelon

It is a common misconception that watermelon is not healthy. Watermelon is not only healthy, but it is also very flavorful and filling, which makes it a great base for any fruit salad. Watermelon is rich in Vitamin C, low in calories, and high in fiber - all qualities that are associated with healthy fruits.

Cantaloupe

Want to add some orange color to your fruit salad? If so, cantaloupe is a great choice. Not only is this fruit delicious, but it is also high in both Vitamin A and Vitamin C. Much like watermelon, cantaloupe is very filling and low in calories. Keep in mind that honeydew is a great alternative.

Kiwi

When preparing a fruit salad, most people do not even think about adding kiwi. This fruit is high in potassium and fiber. Kiwi is also very rich in vitamins. Do you enjoy beverages that are strawberry kiwi flavored? If so, you may want to add both strawberries and kiwi to your fruit salad for a delicious flavor.

Tangerines

Tangerines are another one of the fruits that often goes forgotten when making a fruit salad. They are high in carotenoids, which are known to improve eyesight. Tangerines are also very high in Vitamin C, as well as potassium. If you have no tangerines on hand, both oranges and mangos can make a great addition to your fruit salad and will offer most of the same health benefits.

Fruit salad can be incredibly healthy, but it really depends on the fruits that you decide to add to it. When you select healthy fruits, such as the ones mentioned above, you will be greatly improving how nutritious your fruit salad will be. Other fruits that you may want to think about adding to a fruit salad include papayas and guavas. Food can be good for you and tasty after all!
