LASIK Eye Surgery - Facts and Tips

LASIK is a vision correction procedure that is performed to eliminate a person’s need to wear glasses or use contact lenses. This is a refractive surgical procedure which can actually allow patients to acquire a vision of 20/20 or better. LASIK stands for Laser-Assisted in Situ Keratomileusis and it permanently changes the shape of the cornea.

A microkeratome instrument or a laser is used to cut a thin circular flap in the cornea. The flap is then backed out of the way so that the middle section of the cornea is revealed. By using a computer-controlled laser, tiny bits of this section of the cornea are removed accurately to reshape it. After this is accomplished, and the cornea is reshaped correctly, light will be focused into the eye better and onto the retina, resulting in clearer vision. LASIK eye surgery can correct the nearsighted, farsighted, and even those with astigmatism.

To make sure that you get the best LASIK surgery procedure, you should first and foremost choose a qualified surgeon who you think has enough experience and who you believe that you can trust. Along with this, you should also make sure that you are a good candidate for LASIK. Your eye doctor will examine the health of your eyes and use a corneal topographer to create a map of your cornea. Also, health problems and medications which might disqualify your for LASIK will also be looked over.

LASIK is actually an ambulatory procedure, meaning that you go into the surgery center, have the surgery, and walk out again right after. The actual surgery can actually be done within less than five minutes, with you awake the whole duration of the time. LASIK is a painless procedure, as you will be given anesthesia. You should be sure to bring someone along with you to the surgery, as you won’t be able to drive back home yourself when it is finished.

Whatever happens after surgery can affect your vision just as much as the actual surgery. With that, you should take care of yourself very well after surgery. After LASIK surgery it is important that you follow all of your doctor’s instructions. Also you should rest properly, take the necessary prescriptions, and contact your doctor immediately if there is a suspected problem. Upon arriving home you should rest for at least a few hours. And although you can go to work the next day, it is recommended that you stay at home for a couple of days and stay away from any strenuous activities. Along with all of this, you should avoid rubbing your eye, as this could dislodge the corneal flap (Although this rarely occurs.).

For some patients, although LASIK will lower their prescription level by a great deal, they might still have to use glasses or contact lenses. Also, once you reach your 40s, you may still need reading glasses despite having LASIK. Nevertheless this painless procedure can drastically fix your vision if you make the right choices.
