In the global health trends, nowadays its death that is due to cardio-vascular diseases that tops the list. It’s ironic that the one that pumps life ceases it too. What’s more ironic is that death is caused not by outer forces but by the person himself. Some think it’s by chance, other think it’s their fate. Little really take on board full responsibility for their heart’s health.
Cardio-vascular disease, or in common terms heart disease, is an illness that is triggered partly by genetic predispositions. Genes or family history may have an effect in a person’s health. But this is just part of it, other than special medications and customized diet for special cases, it can be addressed through one’s lifestyle and everyday choices.
One of the choices that need to be taken seriously is the little snacks and munchies that one takes. What one eats may seem irrelevant to ones health, but can actually lead to bigger problems later on. Simple mindless munching of bite-size chocolates for example can lead to at least 200 calories in one sitting, half of which are calories from fat, if one checks the back label. That is already 10% of ones daily energy requirement, and will go unremembered when it’s mealtime. Same holds true with savory snacks such as chips and popcorn. Before one realizes it, they have consumed a lot more empty calories that goes straight to one’s bullocks, especially when done while sitting down in front of the TV, catching the late night show.
Another choice that is undermined is walking or moving without relying too much on technology. With elevators, escalators, walkalators installed for convenience, even the hearts of people are spoiled, too much that it becomes lazy and unfit. Just like an engine that rusts when it’s not used, so does the heart when it is not challenged. Simple physical activity such as walking to short distance destinations or taking the stairs instead of the elevator or escalator can raise ones heartbeat and keep it in good enough shape.
Quick checks on risk to heart disease can be easily done even before any consultation with the doctor. By looking at the mirror alone, one can tell his status with the shape of his body. Being overweight, which one can tell with the presence of extra curves and soft spots in the wrong places. Having an apple-shaped body is the most evident indication of risk as the fats stored are closer to the heart.
A more scientific approach other than observation is the Body Mass Index (BMI), which measures ones ideal weight for his age and height. This takes into consideration the standard energy burnt for ones frame and stage in life. The target BMI for all is 24. Going above this can overwork the heart and trigger illness.
The condition of ones heart is in the control of ones owner. With simple choices in everyday life, the heart can keep pumping life and outlast the other organs, even the holder himself.
