Male menopause is a term that many feel does not exist. In the truest sense of the term, it technically does not exist, but in a practical form, it may. That said, what are the factors that might lead to a “male menopause” problem. Impotency, erectile dysfunction, and various other things can create a type of male menopause in the middle aged man. Here are some things to consider:
Most men are generally able to continue sexually well into old age from a physical standpoint. Testosterone is not going to generally be at the same levels as you age, but the majority of men will still have enough to perform physically. The biggest issue with lower testosterone levels is usually found in desire. The older male may actually not be as sexually “charged” mentally as he was in his younger years. This can lead to sexual problems on the peripheral.
One of the most common problems for the male going through male menopause is the fact that they are beginning to see that they are aging. The fact that a man has met his peak with sex, job, and finances is often enough to send him into a sexual health fog. That fog may manifest itself as erectile dysfunction, lack of sexual desire, or even sexual avoidance in extreme cases. While the end result may be a male menopause of sorts, this is mental rather than physical in most cases.
Men do begin to get lower levels of testosterone at about the mid forties, and this is primarily due to shrinking testicles and secretions. Though this physical element can play a part, it is not usually a physical one. The effect one most commonly sees with this is a lack of sexual desire in the middle aged man. Still, other men with the same biological make up enjoy sexual pleasure well into old age. The reasons for the differences between men is unknown, but it is suspected that it has to do with the mental make up of the man.
The best way to combat this common male sexual health problem is to have a female partner that is understanding. You do not want to be combating sexual problems in the mind without a partner that is willing to understand. If the female realizes that sex is not an automatic thing for older men, then the pressure will decrease and better sexual excitement will follow.
Though male menopause technically does not exist, the simple act of growing older has a menopausal type effect on our minds if not our bodies. With some understanding, fitness, and the realization that age only strengthens us, sexual satisfaction can go on for many years past this aging landmark.
