Defining Your Future

A person encounters hundreds of situations, personalities, and events in a day, in every step and turn one takes. All these circumstances require one simple consistent act at all times: to choose and to decide. Every second, with every breath is a decision to live, a choice made.

One’s life is a series of choices, each of which affects the next second one’s future in different degrees, depending on what’s tied to that decision. This reality is what control means.

personal developmentAs early as infancy, a person is already designed to make decisions automatically. No one can dictate on a baby on their bowel movement, or their feeding time. Their system decides for them. But as their brains develop, they are slowly empowered to make choices, though highly influenced by their environment. Ideally, as one gets older and wiser, they also become less susceptible to external influences and more self-reliant on their decisions. Though sadly, this is not always the case.

With the millions of choices everyday, the temptation to go with the flow is high. Decisions are delegated to the world and its inhabitants. To be or not to be is indeed the question. And sometimes, the simple decision to answer this big question is not even chosen. Why? Because it’s always easier to set it aside.

In truth, the answer to this question does not lie on what one chooses, but on the act of choosing. If one leaves this question rhetorical, failing to act is a choice to not be. If one chooses, whether to be or not to be, then he is already being.

The point being made is simple. One defines his life, his future, his self through the compounded acts he makes in every second of his life. Since there’s a consequence to every move one makes, a domino effect happens.

With this in mind, it is actually possible for one to achieve anything his mind perceives. All it takes is to choose and to act to every thing proactively.

Proactive decision-making is as simple as anticipating the next choices that might arise as a consequence of an act, and weighing ones option before proceeding. This way, one influences the preceding choices he will make instead of passively waiting for what’s next.

Though its true that one cannot predict the future, and therefore cannot completely control what happens subsequently, putting weight on one option will yield to a greater surprise should an unexpected event arise from the decision. Sometimes, it may draw one back by a mile. But often, these bombshells are what catapults one to an advantageous position. One thing common about surprises, it definitely will displace one from his comfort zone with the package deal of opening new opportunities wherever he is led.

In conclusion, it doesn’t matter if one makes the right or wrong decision, what matters is the act of choosing. The more actively one engages at the crossroads encountered, the more defined his future will be. The future is not completely intangible. It’s filled with that can catch one unawares, but it can be designed.
