Sometimes with all the care that we give to our teeth, toothaches still happen. Most of the time we set up an appointment with our dentist to see the problem right away. This is, in fact, the perfect solution that you can have for your teeth. However, there are times when the pain just won’t go away even before your scheduled appointment with the doctor. With the entire schedule you may have to deal with before you see your dentist, it’s crazy to go through the pain before making your dental visit.

The most basic thing you can do to alleviate the pain is to get the the sensation out of your mouth. You can easily do this with ice. Just pack an ice in cloth and put it on the aching area until all the sensation is gone because of the coldness you placed on your tooth. If you can handle the ice, you can also place them inside your mouth until you freeze the pain. If you put toothpaste directly on top of the affected teeth, it could also alleviate the pain.
There are also remedies that you can do without numbing your mouth. You just have to go to your kitchen and make something for yourself to reduce the pain. A clove of garlic with a pinch of salt mixed together should do the trick. Once you have that solution, put it directly on the infected area and observe how it will lower the pain. Pepper should also do the trick. If you mix pepper with a clove oil it will make a powerful remedy for the toothache. Just apply it to the affected area and just watch the pain go away in no time at all. These can be done when the pain is imminent, and it will alleviate the pain before you know it.
There are also kitchen ingredients that you can use to prevent the toothache from coming, and it can even strengthen your teeth. If you love onions, this is an advantage to toothache prevention since onions, when chewed raw, prevents germs that could brew up pain in your teeth. A clove of garlic a day should also do the trick of preventing those toothache events from happening. If you take a daily dosage of Vitamin C, it will also strengthen your teeth. Instead of taking vitamin pills, use lime since it has a higher concentration of that vitamin, and will help prevent all the searing pain that could come unexpected.
Of course, you still have to do the usual things to prevent toothache and decay. Brushing your teeth everyday and visiting your dentist at least twice a year is still a recommended habit for everyone. Nothing beats a professional in his own field so you just have to see your dentist to make sure the pain will go away and never come back. You might be due for a tooth extraction you don’t even know it.

The laws in the United States about dental practices are strict and comprehensive so you can be assured that your dentist is competent and skilled. Dentists in the United States need to have the Doctor of Dental Medicine certificate or D.D.S. in order to practice their profession. This means that every dentist that is practicing in the United States have at least eight years of studying this subject. These dentists can then be considered to be expects in this field because of their extensive exposure. The eight years of training that each licensed dentist in the United States has undergone is composed of four years undergraduate degree and another four years of doctoral training in dentistry.

You should also note that the last two years of their training requires the aspiring dentists to have a hands-on experience in treating patients so that they will be competent when they graduate. Basically, after the dentists have acquired his license, his main task would be to diagnose and cure different oral conditions of a person. These conditions can range from oral cavities to more complex surgeries. The dentists are also expected to advice their patients with professional advices on how to properly take care of their teeth to avoid problems in the future.
But you should also be aware of the fact that there are two kinds of dentists namely generalist and specialist. Generalist is dentists that do not have a field of specialization. They usually provide basic oral care to their patients but they cannot perform more complicated surgeries that serious oral conditions require. However, you can also expect generalist to be competent in many disciplines because they are exposed to a variety of dental practices. Generalist can also become specialist at a later date if they want to have a field of specialization. They only need to study for another year or two to be considered an expert in a more specialized area of dentistry.
There are actually a lot of fields a generalist can choose from such as endodontics, pediatric surgery and periodontics. Other fields of specialization in the United States include dental public health, oral and maxillofacial pathology, prosthodontics, oral and maxillofacial radiology, oral and maxillofacial surgery, and orthodontics. As you can see, cosmetic dental surgery is not included among the fields of specialties that are recognized by the American Dental Association but there are some groups like the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery that are now established to provide credibility to dentist that practice cosmetic surgery.
On the other hand, specialists are dentist that already have a field of specialization. This means that they have the necessary training to perform more complicated dental tasks aside from giving the basic oral care. But you should also take note that choosing a specialist over a generalist don’t automatically mean that you will get a better service. This is because dentists are also human and thus the capability of each person differs from the other.
Overall, it is very difficult to become a dentist in the United States due to the stringent requirements for a licensed dentist. But all the difficulties you will encounter in your aspiration to become a dentist will be worth it at the end because of the sense of fulfillment you can derive from doing what you love and helping other people at the same time. It is no wonder then that there are a lot of aspiring dentists today and the numbers are only increasing as more people realize the benefits of becoming a dentist.
Wisdom teeth are called such because they are the third molars that supposedly appear at the age where people have acquired more wisdom than they normally have as a child. They usually appear between the ages of 17 and 25 although in some cases they may come earlier or later and some don’t even appear at all. Many people wonder what the purpose of wisdom teeth is when they seem to be a nuisance causing undue pain and discomfort. It seems that wisdom teeth were necessary when man’s teeth used to have a predisposition to fall out quickly. Nowadays however, wisdom teeth seem to have lost their purpose either from the “improved” diet of man or from paying particular attention to dental hygiene.
Wisdom teeth usually pose a problem when they become impacted. When a tooth is impacted, it means that the tooth did not erupt from the gum line as it was supposed to be. The tooth might be blocked by existing teeth, the gum itself or the bone within. Knowing this, why then should you decide to remove these impacted wisdom teeth?
First, an impacted wisdom tooth may accumulate food debris around the gums creating a breeding ground for bacteria. Once bacteria are present, the wisdom tooth might decay or worse, the tooth next to it may decay too. If not treated early, this tooth decay may eventually lead to an infection.
Second, following the onset of infection, the patient will experience difficulty in opening the mouth, bad breath, swelling and redness in the gums and of course, pain. The longer that these symptoms are left untreated, the worse the infection will become and the more severe the attacks and pain will be.
Third, for those people wearing braces or undergoing orthodontic treatment, the eruption and/or impaction of the wisdom teeth will delay their progress. The erupting tooth will cause pressure on the adjacent tooth which results in changing the gum line and thus negating the effects of the braces already in place. You may need to have another re-fitting in order to accommodate the wisdom tooth or the removal of it.
Fourth, in the case of an untreated infection, there are cases of cyst formations around an impacted wisdom tooth. Once a cyst is detected, it is imperative that it and the affected wisdom tooth be removed at once as the cyst may lead to bone destruction, jaw displacement or damage to adjacent teeth. There is also the possibility that these cysts may grow into tumors but that’s already very rare.
However, you may ask yourself, if your wisdom tooth has not given you any problems so far why should you have it extracted? The answer is simple. It will most likely cause problems farther down the road. You will never know when these problems may arise so it’s better to just deal with the situation rather than wait for it to get worse before taking any action. It is also advisable to remove the wisdom teeth at an age when you’re in better health so you’re in a better position to endure the healing process.
