Botox injections are a form of botulism which is diluted. This dilution is injected into facial muscles in order to weaken or even paralyze wrinkle-causing muscles. The use of Botox is becoming more and more popular as it has been performed more than 1.6 million times in the United States. And that was just during last year.

Botulinum toxins were first known to be studied in the 1960s to treat neurological disorders. However it wasn’t approved by the FDA until 1989. At that time it was approved to treat eye muscle disorders such as strabismus, crossed eyes, uncontrollable blinking, and blepharospasm as well. 11 years later, in 2000, Botox was then approved to treat cervical dystonia, which is a disorder that involves severe contractions in the neck and shoulders. It was during the eye disorder treatments, however, when doctors took notice to the side effect of Botox which softened frown lines between the eyebrows. In 2002 the FDA found that Botox accomplished to reduce frown lines.

Botox can treat many kinds of wrinkles caused by muscle contraction including crow’s feet, forehead creases, neckbands, and frown lines. All of these can be treated safely and successfully, leaving patients quite satisfied with the results.

If you plan on following through with a Botox procedure, you should first find a well qualified surgeon who you know you can trust and who has a lot of experience. Also, there are a few things that you should expect when going through with a Botox procedure. First off, you will be requested to contract the facial muscles that affect the soon to be treated area. This will help your surgeon analyze the situation better and find the best position for the Botox injection. Also, as like any other medical procedure, you should take into account all of the benefits and risks involved in the Botox procedure. If you are pregnant or you think you might be pregnant or if you are allergic to any of the ingredients that make up Botox, then you should not follow through with this procedure.

After your procedure, you should avoid alcohol and remain upright for a span of hours at least. There is generally no recovery period following this and you can in fact go right back to your regular activities after leaving the center. Your results should be noticeable within a few days and will last for around 3 to 4 months. However, you might have to go through occasional touchups.

The cost of a Botox cosmetic treatment varies depending on the region in the United States that you live in. It can range from a cost of $370 to about a little over $500.

Overall Botox is proven to be a procedure which is both safe and effective, as Botulinum Toxin Type A has been evaluated and analyzed in more than 200 studies within a span of 20 years. Botox has been widely used for more than 11 years now and there are no systemic complications associated with Botox that have been recorded.
