Bleeding ulcers, also known as peptic ulcers can cause extreme discomfort among individuals affected. Although they are painful, bleeding ulcers can be treated fairly easily. Treatment of bleeding ulcers can subdue the discomfort of symptoms allowing affected individuals to live normally.
Bleeding ulcers have two primary causes. These include an infection of H.pylori bacteria, and the use of NSAIDS. Other factors said to be linked in the development of bleeding ulcers include; excessive alcohol consumption, smoking, use of ibuprofen, and physical trauma. The factors can result in the development of bleeding ulcers.
The symptoms of bleeding ulcers are typically painful in nature, although some individuals may not experience any symptoms at all. Common symptoms of bleeding ulcers include extreme pain of the stomach lasting anywhere from minutes to hours, a hunger like pain in the navel sometimes extending into the back, and bloating with nausea after the consumption of food. Other common symptoms of bleeding ulcers can include a loss of appetite and weight loss. While not as common in occurrence, vomiting of blood and stool that resembles tar can also be associated with having bleeding ulcers.
Treatment for bleeding ulcers can be initiated by your physician. In order to do this you physician can determine the cause of your bleeding ulcers as your treatment will coincide with the cause. If your bleeding ulcers are caused by an infection of H.pylori bacteria, your physician will order you to take antibiotics. The antibiotics will control the infection allowing your symptoms to subside. If your bleeding ulcers are caused by taking NSAID’s, your physician will inform you that you must not take these medications and will inform you of proper pain relievers.
Many of the symptoms of bleeding ulcers can be relieved by these methods. You may also be able to prevent the reoccurrence of your bleeding ulcer symptoms. Prevention of your bleeding ulcer symptoms can be achieved by quitting smoking, moderation of alcohol, and by not taking NSAIDs.
Bleeding ulcers are a treatable condition. However, if not treated properly, bleeding ulcers can have complications. If you have been diagnosed with bleeding ulcers you must contact your physician if you suspect that you are suffering from possible complications. Symptoms of complications from bleeding ulcers include; vomit that looks like coffee grounds, continual abdominal pain with vomiting, and frequent dizzy spells when laying down or moving form one place to another.
These are all symptoms that could signal that your bleeding ulcers have complicated, or that you have another condition all together. Bleeding ulcers that do not respond to treatment can also be a red flag for cancer. In such cases surgery may be a viable option.
