Bioflavonoids and Grapes

Bioflavonoids, also known as flavonoids, are what causes certain fruits and vegetables to have brightly-colored pigments. More importantly, bioflavinoids are essential for the proper absorption and use of vitamin C and help vitamin C maintain healthy connective tissue in our bodies. Bioflavonoids also function as an antioxidants—they protect vitamin C from oxidation and prevent ruptures in capillaries.

Eating grapes is an easy way to get bioflavonoids in your diet as they are a good source for this nutrient. Bioflavonoids also help protect healthy cells in your body from being eaten by cancerous ones, as well as helping kill cancer cells. In fact, some people believe that grapes will cure cancer, and scientific evidence is mounting that grapes can prevent cancer.

Eating grapes alone is beneficial to your health, but their healing and health power is actually made stronger by eating other foods which are known work synergistically with the nutrients in grapes. For instance, making garlic part of your regular diet, as well as nuts and other types of berries, will provide your body with the strongest and best defenses against a variety of common illnesses, diseases, and chronic health problems.

There is also mounting evidence that grapes can help prevent or slow down heart disease. Back in the 1990s, scientists noticed that French people had much lower heart disease rates than other countries. This is referred to as the French Paradox, and it was concluded that the difference might be because the French drink red wine with their meals. Scientists started studying the grapes the wine is made from, and there are now more than 300 studies that show drinking red wine or grape juice can actually help reduce the risk of heart disease over time. In fact, grape juice or wine appears to slow down or completely block the artery clogging effects of fatty foods.

Many of the bioflavonoids found in grapes can also be found in chocolate, black tea, and green tea. However, like all plant-based foods, the levels of concentration are different in each. There are not many studies comparing foods against each other for health benefits of bioflavonoids. So far, most of the studies have focused on grapes. For instance, red grapes are found to be the healthiest and best kind to eat for helping prevent heart disease or cancer. You will find there are more bioflavonoids concentrated in the skins or peels of fruit, but drinking grape juice is beneficial for health and disease prevention in general. Eating grapes will not only give you more nutrition to help fight disease. An added benefit is they will also give your body additional fiber.

Berry lovers will be glad to know that while grapes have gotten the most scientific attention in recent years, berries are just as beneficial to your health. Blueberries in particular have the highest amounts of potential cancer fighting antioxidants. Additionally, berries are packed with vitamins and fiber. Strawberries and blackberries are also extremely healthy foods, and blackberries have as much as 8 grams of fiber in a cup.
