Adult Bedwetting - Causes and Treatment

The average adult person voids 1200 to 1500 ml of urine throughout the whole day. Sometimes this amount varies depending on the amount of fluid taken, amount of sweat excreted, environmental temperature, vomiting and diarrhea. There are many common problems associated with voiding like frequency, urgency, hesitancy and enuresis also none as bedwetting. Nocturnal enuresis is the involuntary voiding during sleep.

What are the possible causes of adult bedwetting?

toiletNatural aging

As people age, their muscle mass decrease and their neurological wiring thicken which causes it to slow down, making it difficult for old adult people to move quickly as well as making their reflexes slower. The aging process affects not only the sympathetic system (the voluntary movement that we have conscious control over like muscle contraction) but as well as the parasympathetic system (the involuntary movement that our subconscious controls like breathing). Aging decreases the urinary control of adults.

Obstruction and infection

An obstruction like an inflammation or tumor in the lower urinary tract can cause unnecessary pressure eliciting a feeling to void specially at night. Infection of the urinary tract can also cause urinary excretory inconsistencies.

Medication

Some medications taken by adults are diuretics. This type of drug causes voiding of fluid. People with kidney problems have difficult time excreting urine causing their bodies to load up on excessive fluids which can produce extra load work on the heart. Taking diuretics promotes voiding to prevent possible cardiac heart failure. However taking diuretics after 4pm can cause nocturnal enuresis.

Anti diuretic hormone

The ADH hormone is one of many hormones that affect fluid volume in our bodies. This hormone called vasopressin controls the excretion of water by the kidney. It is secreted by the pituitary gland. Problems with this gland can cause enuresis challenges.

Diet

What we eat can also affect this condition. Excessive fluid intake especially before sleep can really make an adult prone to nocturnal voiding. Try to avoid drinking coffee and tea before night time. These drinks are diuretics they will give you the urge to void during sleep. Avoid also drinking alcohol. Alcohol weakens bladder muscle control especially during high intoxications.

Psychological stress

Nocturnal enuresis can sometimes be related to a suppression emotions or personal related problems. Consult with a medical doctor on ways how to release this stress. It maybe a sport outlet activity like bowling or just relaxing exercises like listening to soothing music.

What are some tips to manage this urinary problem?

Timed voiding

Practice voiding several times a day during specific time intervals. The adult chooses to “void on the clock” at given intervals while awake, rather than wait until a voiding urge occurs. This exercise trains his bladder to urine on specific times.

Fluid management: Avoid excessive fluid loading before sleeping. Avoid caffeine, tea, aspartame, and alcohol especially during the evening.

Medications: Choose to drink your diuretic medications during day time or at least 8 hours before sleeping. Consult with your doctor.

Do pelvic muscle exercises: This exercise aims to strengthen muscles that assist the bladder. To be effective, these exercises need to be performed 2 or 3 times a day for at least a month.
