Sony Playstation 3 vs. Microsoft Xbox 360: Point-By-Point Comparison

Sony and Microsoft - These two major gaming console giants have long been battling against each other for supremacy and their present arena is between the Playstation 3 and the Xbox 360, upgraded versions of their original predecessors. Even before their release, a lot of marketing strategies is involved in hyping up the best of what these consoles have to offer. What it will boil down to, in the long run, is will the games for both consoles be better developed and have a better playing experience now that they have the best platforms (at this time) to execute with? Here is a point-by-point comparison of the two consoles’ current specifications.

Processor – PS3’s 3.2Ghz Cell vs. Xbox 360’s 3.2Ghz G5

Rent Video Games Online with GameFly.com!

The processor is the core hardware for both systems. It determines how much power the console has to process complex calculations in less time which is altogether very important considering you’re dealing with complicated 3D graphics for both systems. That said, theoretically, the PS3 can do more since it has 7 synergistic processing units, while Xbox 360 has 3 even though they’re both clocked at 3.2 Ghz. However, since the PS3 is more complicated to program games for, Xbox 360 will have more games in its initial line-up compared to PS3.

Also, relevant to processing speed is the floating point performance measurement of teraflops. The PS3 has 2.18 tfps and Xbox 360 has 1. Again, these values translate to world realism and the physics side of the game. Its effect will be seen on how real the background is in terms of natural movement, like with trees and rain and wind. It also functions with large yet independent movement of groups as seen in massive armies, and gives added realism to explosions and basic destruction.

It all really depends on how game developers will exploit the powers of these two consoles and how fast they can churn the games for the eagerly-awaiting gamers market.

Memory – PS3’s 256MB XDR @ 3.2GHz vs. Xbox 360’s 512MB GDDR3 @ 700MHz

What all this means is that the bigger memory you have, combined with a fast processor, the faster you can process and display complex graphics, which affects the overall framerate speed of your game. In this case, the PS3 has half of the installed memory of the Xbox 360 but can process data faster. It’s like trying to swallow a large chunk of data and your processor determines how fast you can chew it. Which will be faster – a small chunk chewed at 3.2Ghz or a big chunk chewed at 700 Mhz?

Graphics/GPU – PS3’s 500Mhz NVIDIA vs. Xbox 360’s 500Mhz ATI

The impressive graphics displays of both PS2 and the Xbox have already shown just how powerful these consoles are. Just how much can they outdo themselves in this department lies in the hands of two equally powerful yet totally different graphics processors. Sony, however, is packing for the future as it incorporates High-Definition output for the PS3 which means you’ll be able to enjoy better graphics display, not just for the games but for other uses as well, if you also have High Definition TV (HDTV).

Storage – PS3’s 60 Gb HDD vs. Xbox 360’s 20 Gb HDD

These two console giants are really packing it in with whopping 60 and 20 Gigabytes of removable/detachable storage for the PS3 and the Xbox 360, respectively! And if that’s not enough, there are memory cards for both, memory sticks for Sony and additional memory coming from USB ports – 6 for the PS3 and 3 for Xbox 360. This is more than what the average user will ever need.

Media Type – PS3’s BLUray Discs vs. Xbox 360’s DVD-9

Most game discs nowadays are stored on DVD-9’s much like those of the Xbox 360. What Sony has got going for them is that they’re also the manufacturer of BLUray which is a high-definition storage disk capable of holding 54 Gigagbytes of data. This type of storage can be a potential necessity in the future.

Controllers – PS3’s up to 7 vs. Xbox 360’s up to 4

The form and figure of the controllers are basically the same for the Xbox 360 except for minor modifications in the color scheme. The PS3’s controller looks somewhat like a stealth plane with a more streamlined figure compared to its predecessor. It all depends on you where you’ll feel more comfortable. It is astounding and surprising as well that Sony has included as much as 7 potential physical connections, using Bluetooth, for its PS3, while Microsoft has up to 4.

Sound – both sporting 5.1 Dolby Surround Sound

Online potential – Both consoles feature Ethernet and Wi-Fi capabilities. They come in handy when playing online, or for non-gaming activities like downloading music and videos. Microsoft has an edge because it already has an online network in place.

Thanks for that post. I have not been able to find one that breaks those two down in a good comparison. I am still torn though. Which to get? I am a Halo fan so I am leaning toward the 360. But the PS3 has a HD DVD player.

ps3 is technically better but microsoft(copying sony marketing plan, because microsoft is a biter)has had time get upgrade and get better games. so amerika (being impatiant wants 360). sony is already responding with (in my opinion) impressive games.

Resistance: fall of man
killzone 2
motor storm
the god father ps3
virtua fighter 5

sony just needs time to devolop the ps3

So which one is better?

PS3 is better than xbox 360 in many ways. I think PS3 will show it’s true potential at the end of 2007. Then Xbox 360 will die.

Comment by Babu — March 6, 2007 @ 5:47 am

XBox 360 won’t die. It’ll multiply.

Seriously though. The systems are very similar in graphic and processing power judging by the look and performance of the games so far. The XBox360 has had a lead and has a greater number of good games out for it, but the PS3 will be catching up before too long and there will be better games developed for it as well.

To be honest, when I got my PS3 I was a bit disappointed. I bought Resistance: Fall of Man along with it, and I was really underwhelmed by the quality of the game. It is a very mediocre shooter and the graphics really aren’t that great, especially when compared to games like Gears of War.

I think when developers have more time to get things right for the PS3 the games will start looking better, but the systems are pretty evenly matched this generation.

Processor – PS3’s 3.2Ghz Cell vs. Xbox 360’s 3.2Ghz G5

You missed how PS3 has a dual core PPC chip, and 7 SPEs, 1 of which reserved by the OS

Memory – PS3’s 256MB XDR @ 3.2GHz vs. Xbox 360’s 512MB GDDR3 @ 700MHz

You missed how PS3 has another bank of 256 MB of RAM dedicated for the GPU.
Which means the GPU and CPU dont have to share bandwidth

Graphics/GPU – PS3’s 500Mhz NVIDIA vs. Xbox 360’s 500Mhz ATI

People dismantled the PS3 and found its 550 MHz, just like Sony’s been saying.
Use ACTUAL specs not rumored specs

Storage – PS3’s 60 Gb HDD vs. Xbox 360’s 20 Gb HDD

You neglect how PS3s harddrive is standard, and thus developers can depend on it. Where on 360 they cant

“And if that’s not enough, there are memory cards for both, memory sticks for Sony and additional memory coming from USB ports – 6 for the PS3 ”

6? When was this written?

Media Type – PS3’s BLUray Discs vs. Xbox 360’s DVD-9

You missed how bluray is slower than 360s DVD, though it has a consistant load speed disc wide, where 360s slows down the closer the data is to the middle, and even moreso on the second layer.

Controllers – PS3’s up to 7 vs. Xbox 360’s up to 4

No PS3 game uses more than 4 yet though

Sound – both sporting 5.1 Dolby Surround Sound

PS3 supports 7.1

In short, every single point was horribly done.

BOKZA DHS, you’re just about the most ignorant idiot I have witnessed on the internet.

You bring up specs that doesn’t matter on the performance or the capabilities of handling games created by major game developers. That doesn’t mean Xbox 360 is the best, so you go suck a cock.

The biggest controversy between PS3 fans and Xbox 360 fans is the main part of gaming consoles, the games available on the market. Right now people claim Xbox360 is better because it’s been on the market longer and has more game titles. Also, it’s a fact that game developers find it is more difficult to develop games for PS3 because of it’s format.

So as of right now Xbox 360 may seem superior, but like someone else mentioned, PS3 will grow. Once game developers learn to work with the PS3 they can take advantage of it’s hardware, which is better than the 360. I could see the 360 be eventually eaten up, not completely off the market, but PS3 will be the dominate console. It’s like when DVDs were first brought in, it came slowly because developers cannot take advantage of it’s capabilities yet (not of the same reasons, but you get the picture).

That last comparison concerning the Microsoft networking being in place is not valid.

Microsoft requires online players to pay for online play.
Sony is free and does not require a login to a Sony site to play online games.
Its actually a bonus not to have a “network” setup.
Each company game provider maintains and provides at no charge online play.

Well well…. I have to say some opinions expressed above are well thought out.. BUT! Those of you who say that XBox will cream PS3 are way out of line. The basic fact that people - well lets face it, XBox Babies, can only complain about the hefty price tag and the lack of a games library is boring… For one: PS3 brings everything that XBox 360 has, but with better definition (1080p), a larger hard-drive (60Gb), better HDMI (all bit ranges, v1.3 architecture), and of corse, the killer - Blu-Ray Drive (that’s $1000AUS alone!!!)… When XBox released there stupid external… ahh! Improved DVD Drive (HD-DVD) they want you to pay an extra $200AUS for it… That brings up XBox 360 now doesn’t it! And for what, the space of 30Gb and the backing of only 20 or so major movie compainies!)…
Geeee, Microsoft were so keen on getting there piece of s… onto the market they forgot to add in new age technology! When 3rd party games studios need more space than a mesely 30Gb… like, say - Assasians Creed, which is already larger! Then lets see which gets more backing!

I am a loyal SONY fan, and i bought a PS2 when it first came out. A year later, my brother bought a XBOX, and it came with sgea GT, a very frustrating game. I played Ghost recon 2 for it, and could not see the enemies except for the red diamonds that surrounded them. Fast forward 2 2007, and at june 6, i got a PS3 with RFM, and i played it all night. Then, a month ago, my brother bought a 360, and BOOM! HDD failure!!!!
wat now XBOX fans???
360’s suck ass, not only do they have a AC adapter, they have 2 charger up b4 they can turn on o.0
whereas the PS3 uses a computer sized power cord, and we have unlimited electricity, so it dont matter how much we use (if u have the money)
not to mention, the PS3 has the playstation network, which is WAY better then “live”.
i am in intro 2 engineering class right now, so i cant right any more.

One thing to remember is that most of the DVD industries are leaning more torwards HD-DVDs and not BLUray. The only company that I know of that will be sticking to BLUray is, of course, Sony Films. I’m not saying that no one will ever use the BLUray format, all I’m saying is that for right now and for the near future most companies are using HD-DVD instead, mainly because it’s cheaper and easier to format. But that’s not to say a few years down the road there won’t be BLUray discs on every shelf of every Blockbuster, Best Buy or every other retailer. I am simply talking about right now.

As far as the PS3 and Xbox 360 controversy. Right now the 360 does have a slightly better game selection and better graphics, but that’s primarily because game developers haven’t quite grasped the entire capabilities of the PS3. Give it another year, maybe two, and the PS3 will be absolutely mind blowing, but not to say that the graphics aren’t good right now, but there’s plenty of room for improvement, which will happen.

Now as for the price controversy, keep in mind that for the 360 pretty much everything you’d need to match the PS3 (HD-DVD, Wireless Adapter, Play & Charge Kit, etc.) you have to buy seperately, and actually making the 360 more expensive than the PS3, seeing as how the PS3 has all that included. Also, don’t forget that the PS3 isn’t just a gaming console, its practically a media/entertainment center. Surf the internet, store your pictures and video, BLUray player, media/music player and 100% bluetooth. Also, let’s not forget how prone to overheating the 360 is. I don’t know about you but there’s nothing more frustrating than being in the middle of a game and all of the sudden, out of the blue, your console freezes up on you.

All in all the 360 may have the slight edge right now, but if you want to get your moneys worth, spend the extra $100 and get the PS3, because with the advancement in game development and game titles in the year(s) to come, the Playstation name will once again be on top of the gaming console market.

i think many of the opinions on this site are good, exept that of XBOX 360. Let me tell all you XBOX 360 fans what you will see in the future of gaming.
-XBOX 360 fans wining that they should have bought a PS3 instead because many popular future game releases will be only for PS3 because then Xnox 360 wont be able to handle future games.
-I dont want to talk about hardware power because many hve proved that point welll already
- And lastly, “PS3 RULES!!!!” us ps3 fans saying (rubbing it in your face)

So suck it up Xbox 360 will never will this console war against PS3 so suck it up!

XBOX or PS3
Hmmmm let see..

Why do i have to buy a optional wireless headset for my Xbox when i can use the same headset that i use on my cell phone for my Ps3 (bluetooth)
Why do i have to buy the new Xbox Black for HDMI when my PS3 already comes with it.
Why do i have to pay to play online games with my xbox when i dont have to with my PS3
Why is it that i have to return my xbox back and call for a coffin for it when i get the 3 red rings of death when i havent had a single failure with my PS3.

Why? its as simple as what your moms and dads have always said “You get what you pay for”

My entertainment is very important to me and i dont mind spending the extra money for a better product.

Perhaps in saying that at the moment the xbox has better games might be correct and ill give you that. But please note that when developers start to utilize the full functionality of the PS3 i wont have to go out and buy another xbox to catch up with what the PS can do.

Hi, I am an embedded systems engineer and hence have some experience in hardware. Moreover, I have to say that I am very interested in the technical aspects of games/game console as well as a serious gamer. Also, I have to make clear that I am no sony fan boy at all!

Despite this, I do understand very well hardware specs and decide which console offers best hardware and will hence result in a better performance. So, who ever is interested, please read on this argument.

Without too much technicalities (as most of them have already been mentioned here), the PS3 has best hardware and the largest potential to deliver graphics as well as gaming experience. The PS3 can grow and surpass the XBOX 360 as easy as ABC. So why isn’t that happening?
Well, did u know how to walk when u were born? no u did not…give time game developers to learn the PS3 hardware and when that’s done, you can then fairly compare 360 to PS3. This is valid for both games and graphics. Remember, the only limiting factor for a game developer is simply (and always) Hardware not their imagination! Since the PS3 has better hardware I am sure it will be better then 360!

why is the 360 selling more? well apart from having been longer on market and that it is cheaper, it has also been modded. I know quite a bunch of guys that bought a 360 just because they could play backup….It wrong! one ought to buy a console for its performance no other crap! whatever, game developers know that so, when they develop a game, they’ll know that if they do it for PS3, whoever wants it, will have to buy it whereas for the 360, only ~25% of who has the console wil buy it! thus from a game producer’s perspective, the sales figure of the 360 is taken to be a quarter with a pinch of salt!!! This will keep PS3 alive until programmers learn PS3’s hardware well and by then, 360 will start retire unfortunately. I say unfortunately cause competition is always better than any monopoly! I would like 360 to be up to PS3’s level exactly such that the consumers (we) can benefit most!

The blu-ray should be the most apparent (even intuitively)reason why the PS3 will eventually result superior to 360. HD games take a lot more space than standard games. In the future, I am expecting games to reach 20GB or over! (this might take some time though it will happen! wait and see!!)

One last comment, don’t call PS3 next-generation console….its more appropriate to call it the next-(next-generation) console. The next-generation (2 - 3 years) will be 360’s and PS3’s, but after that there will only be PS3 (again unfortunately for the same same reason explained above).

Succinctly, u buy a 360 for 2or a max of 3 years and then…off to the PS3…unless 360 includes a blu-ray!!!! (which I will never believe even if i see it with my eyes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

Thanks guys….hope PS3 and 360 level-up and stay that very way for ever!!!

Comment by pz — January 14, 2008 @ 8:53 am

The way I look at it is for example, take the PS2 or the xbox for that matter. Put their first game into it. Play it for a while, you will most likely get board. Take one of thier most recent games and put it in. It’s going to be much better than the first one! All im saying is the playstation 3 hasnt been out for a long time and will get better. The xbox 360 has had a fair amount of time more than the ps3 to develop. We’re most likely seeing the way the rest of the xbox 360 games will look. In my eyes AS OF NOW there pretty much the same. The ps3 has some time yet, it WILL get better.

Now if Microsoft could get Rockstar to sign on for GTA 5 Xbox 720 exclusivity… that would effectively kill Sony’s gaystation franchise.

i fun it funny to hear the word “fanboy”, be it combined with xbox or ps3. just pick the best console, dont follow suit or pick a console ‘cos you got the last generation from the same company…you idiot fanboys XP

when i was young i got a nintendo 64 (1997) because, well it suited me (and every other kid my age). nintendo went on to sell more 64’s than anyone could believe. and if you ask someone today if they would rather play a ps1 or a nintendo game, im sure they would opt for the N64.

when i was in my teens i got an xbox (2002). this wasnt because my mates had them, they had ps2’s. i bought the xbox because it was the most technologically advanced xbox may not have been as popular as ps2 then, but we all know now that xbox held its age much better in every aspect.

now its 2008, and i have preordered the MGS4 PS3 bundle. all of my friends have 360’s, none of them have melted or broken or RROD’ed. i dont think the xbox 360 is a bad system (halo 3, gears of war…viva pinata…lol what was microsoft thinking!?), i just believe that in a very short period it will just become ‘today’s PS2′. by that i mean the xbox 360 will be surpassed by the more expensive, more thought-out, more future-in-mind console; which is the PS3.

they are equal now (elite and ps3), but in the near future xbox 360 will depreciate quickly due to DVD size limitations. assume whatever you want, but 9Gb will not suffice in the future for games.
According to BLORGE, xbox 360 would have to use a ’series’(errmm…7!) of discs.

now before you start to think “he is an undercover (i didnt want to write this…yuck) ps3 fanboy (spit)” remember that i have never bought from the same brand. i have just been smart (and lucky) enough to buy the best systems.
