The sitcom is one of the most iconic fixtures on American television. Throughout the years, many have come and gone. Trying to assemble a top five list of modern day sitcoms of all time was no easy task. Though many sitcoms have had a bit of longevity, only a handful are consistently funny week in and week out. As such, I was able to narrow the list down to the top five. If you disagree, feel free to share your favorites in the comments section down below.
5. Friends -Perhaps no other sitcom on television was able to produce as many stars as the world famous show Friends. Each and every one of the Friends gang went on to varying degrees of stardom, and the reruns are still running regularly with no end in sight. Friends was among the greatest of all time.
4. Scrubs -Though Scrubs does not yet have the longevity factor going for it, what it does have is a hilarious cast and great storylines week after week. Scrubs is one of those shows that grabs you week after week, and refuses to let go. You will find yourself laughing the entire show, and that makes for a great sitcom.
3. Will and Grace -Regardless of what some of the detractors might say, Will and Grace actually shattered some social barriers while at the same time making everyone laugh. Being among the first shows to make homosexuality a central theme, Will and Grace is simply funny as it can be. A super strong cast, and numerous guest stars over the years made Will and Grace must see television for sitcom lovers all over the world.
2. CheersPerhaps no other sitcom in the world provokes memories quite like Cheers. Virtually everyone loved this show when it was on the air, and to this day it remains funny and relevant. Sam, “Mayday” Malone and the gang at Cheers reminded us of our own lives, and helped us to laugh at ourselves on a regular basis. The characters seemed to remind us of people we knew in our own lives, and that only made it seem that much more funny.
1. Seinfeld -Love it or hate it, Seinfeld is the greatest sitcom of all time. No sitcom has ever dominated television like Seinfeld did for the vast majority of the last couple of decades. Every current star it seems guest starred on Seinfeld at one time or another, and every episode is special in its own right. The amazing thing about Seinfeld is that all these years later, the episodes are still known by their own names. That is not true of very many sitcoms at all.
Sitcoms come and go over the years, and a special handful stick with us. They are replayed over and over through reruns and introduced to a brand new generation all over again. Like “I Love Lucy” and others from years past, these five sitcoms will take their place as all time favorites in the years to come.
