In the movie The Proposal, Sandra Bullock plays Margaret. She is a career-driven editor at a publishing company in New York. Margaret is known as the company witch. Despite her success, Margaret faces one major problem that could destroy her career. She is about to be deported back to Canada.
As she is searching for ways to remain in the United States, Margaret comes up with an idea. In a spur of the moment decision, Margret announces that she and her assistant Andrew, who is played by Ryan Reynolds, are getting married. Completely clueless to Margaret’s idea at the time, Andrew goes along with the plan - despite how much he loathes her. Later, Andrew agrees to the plan in exchange for a position as editor.
Andrew and Margaret go through the interview process to make the engagement official, where they are warned that faking a marriage to prevent deportation is a crime. They are also told that they will be asked questions about one another and that other steps will be taken to investigate their relationship. For this reason, Andrew and Margaret embark on a weekend trip to Alaska, where they will announce their engagement. Here, they learn things that they never knew about one another.
The main factor that often determines a romantic comedy is the actor and actress that star together. If the chemistry simply does not work, the movie is a total flop. In this romantic comedy, the chemistry between Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds is just as it needs to be. In their hate scenes, it is easy to believe that Bullock and Reynolds really do hate each other. The chemistry between them during the love scenes is not quite as strong but at the same time, it is also strong enough to be believable. Since there are more comedic scenes than there are romantic scenes, it balances itself out.
One of the best things about the movie? Betty White’s performance. White, who has some incredibly funny and emotional scenes in this movie, plays Andrew’s Grandma. The former Golden Girl star has not lost her comical touch. This is probably one of the most hysterical roles that Betty White has had over her career.
Overall, The Proposal is a very good movie. It is much more comical than it is romantic, which is great for those who want to see a movie that is friendly for both men and women. This movie gets 4.5 stars and is a definite must see!
