Starting May 5th in Chicago, New Line Cinema is going to start filming a remake that many thought would never happen. The popular Freddy Krueger will once again be haunting the dreams and realities of all the children of Elm Street. On the heels of remakes of other classic horror movies such as Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Friday the 13th, and Halloween, this Nightmare on Elm Street has some pretty deep entertainment shoes to fill. The original Nightmare was a cult classic right away, and has retained enough popularity to spawn nine movies and two television series.

This version of Nightmare on Elm Street will star a brand new Freddy. It has been announced that Jackie Earle Haley will don the bladed fingers this time around. Haley is best known lately for his Watchmen role, and he is taking over the blades from actor Robert Englund twenty five years after the original movie.
Other confirmed actors in the film include Kyle Gallner who will play the role of Quentin, as well as Thomas Dekker who will fill the role of Jesse. The role of Jesse was played by a very young and green Johnny Depp in the original Nightmare on Elm Street.
The official release date is slated for April 16 of 2010, but as with any pre-production movie this could change.
The big question among most of the Nightmare on Elm Street fans is who will play the role of Nancy. Nancy was the original movie’s only survivor and the female lead in the movie. That role has been batted about the forums over and over, and it should be interesting to see who it ends up being. One thing is for sure… They need a heavy hitter to bring the excitement level up. Nancy has to be a great actress to pull off the role.
The Nightmare on Elm Street fans are mixed on the idea so far. As the film draws closer, you can be sure that they will begin to get excited. This is especially true if the film is advertised as heavily as I anticipate. Nightmare on Elm Street has the potential to be the biggest movie of 2010.
One thing that they need to remember is that you really do not need to tinker with the script that much. The old movie had an awesome story, and was the driving force behind that franchise. The other remakes were not exactly great stories. TCM and Friday the 13th were really just slasher movies, and do not compare story wise to Nightmare on Elm Street. Leave the story alone and just add in some new scares and graphics. Modernize it in other words.
I, for one, can not wait to see it.

jesse wasn’t played by johnny depp (he played Glenn), the character jesse was the star of nightmare on elm street 2 freddy’s revenge. But great review, I know it will kick all the other horror remakes’butts, though I did kinda liked Zombie’s take on Myers.
