Although it has been said for quite some time now that the show My Name is Earl would be cancelled, there were people still holding out hope. In fact, most fans were hoping that TBS would agree to pick up the television show. This would mean that My Name is Earl would be able to produce new episodes. This is something that has been seen a whole lot in recent times, but was very popular with Showtime and Disney in the 1990’s.
Unfortunately, despite all of the time that it has taken to get the matter resolved, My Name is Earl has been officially cancelled. TBS did not pick up the show. According to E!Online, Fox made an official statement which said, “While we had hoped to find a way to produce additional episodes for TBS, in the final analysis, we simply could not the economics work without seriously undermining the artistic integrity of the series. As none of us, Greg included, want the show to go on anything but a high note, we regret that we must put to rest any speculation that Earl will continue.”
My Name is Earl aired for four seasons. Many of the celebrities that starred in the sitcom have already landed new gigs that will be completed in the future. Jason Lee will continue his role as Dave Seville in Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel. Ethan Suplee is rumored to be playing in The Dry Land with America Ferrera and Wilmer Valderrama. Other people who played smaller roles in this show have also picked up roles in other movies.
Many fans are disappointed about the end of My Name is Earl, especially due to the cliffhanger that ended the series. Since the show had not yet been officially cancelled until now, it is no surprise that they were unable to prepare for the end of the series. Unfortunately, this means that the cliffhanger will never be able to go resolved. This is one of the main reasons that so many fans were hoping that My Name is Earl would be able to live on through TBS.
Some of the other shows that have been cancelled as of 2009 include According to Jim, Battlestar Galactica, Cristina’s Court, Deal or No Deal, Dirty Sexy Money, Eli Stone, Don’t Forget the Lyrics!, ER, Everybody Hates Chris, Kyle XY, King of the Hill, Life on Mars, Lipstick Jungle, Prison Break, Samantha Who?, and Without a Trace. It certainly seems as though the economy has affected entertainment! This is not even to mention the shows which have lost characters due to “budget cuts,” which includes Grey’s Anatomy and Desperate Housewives.
My Name is Earl made us laugh and it may have made some of us cry, but now it is time to say goodbye.

Battlestar Galactica was NOT cancelled. The producers of the show chose to end it after this past season. They wanted the show to control its own ending so they knew the only way to do that was to end it before it got stale, old and cancelled. I for one am sure the show could have been strong for at least 2 more full seasons, but perhaps I’m biased. Bravo to the producers for ending it their way.
