It was the first weekend that Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince was in the movie theater. How did the latest installment of the Harry Potter movie series do? Many had predicted that due to the two year wait, the number of fans of the series would dwindle down and this movie would not be quite as successful as all of the other Harry Potter prequels. Here is a closer look at how well Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince did in comparison to both the other Harry Potter movies, other movies out this weekend, and some of the other big hits that have recently been in theaters. So did Harry Potter face the music?
Between the Friday and Sunday after the date that it was released, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince earned $79.5 million, according to E!Online News. Of course, this is not all that the movie has earned so far. The newest Harry Potter was released on a Wednesday. Between Wednesday and Sunday, the movie has made $159.7 million.
As for the idea that the fans were going to lose interest in the Harry Potter series? Nonsense. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince has actually earned more money during its opening weekend than any of the other movies have in the past. This does not seem like a movie series that has lost its touch. Perhaps the two year wait made fans because even more anxious about the movie and actually encouraged them to see it in the theater instead of waiting for it to come out on DVD. Plus, it is often said that once you’re a Potter fan, you’re always a Potter fan.
This past weekend, the movie Bruno was also in theaters. It was released two weeks prior. It was widely promoted by websites, like Myspace. During its opening weekend, the movie’s sales soared much more than expected. Unfortunately, however, the movie did not see too many sales during its second weekend. Bruno only ended up earning $30.6 million. During it’s first weekend, the movie earned $80.4 million, which actually puts it above Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.
The Dark Knight, which is the last movie that Heath Ledger starred in before he died, did earn a whole lot more than the latest Harry Potter movie. It earned $158.4 million during the Friday, Saturday, and Sunday of its release, according to E!Online News.
And as far as how Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince did in comparison to Twilight? At $69.4 million, Twilight did not earn as much as any of the movies in the Harry Potter series did to date during its opening weekend. Will the sequel to Twilight, New Moon, be able to compete with the rest of the Harry Potter series? It should be interesting to see if it will. The movie will be released in November.

If opening weekend was any prediction of what its overall sales will be, it is safe to say that Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince will do fairly well.
