Five Things You May Not Know About John McCain

John McCain first became known to the American public when his plane was shot down during the Vietnam War and he became a prisoner of war. He served his country admirably and showed a high amount of character and resolve during his time in a prison camp in North Vietnam. John McCain returned from his time as a P.O.W. broken, but not beaten and slowly rose from an officer in the United States military, to a United States Representative, to eventually a United States Senator. John McCain ran for President in the year 2000, but was defeated in the Republican primary by eventual two term President, George W. Bush. A great deal of information is known about this great American, but here are five things you may not know about John McCain.

2. John McCain represented Arizona’s first district in the United States House of Representatives from 1983 to 1987. He was preceded in that office by John Jacob Rhodes Jr. and after he moved on to the United States Senate he was succeeded in that position by his predecessor’s son John Jacob Rhodes III

3. While at the United States Naval Academy, John McCain participated in boxing as a lightweight.

4. John McCain’s first wife was a model.

5. John McCain has authored five books: Faith of My Fathers, Worth the Fighting For, Why Courage Matters: The Way to a Braver Life, Character Is Destiny: Inspiring Stories Every Young Person Should Know and Ever Adult Should Remember, and Hard Call: Great Decisions and the Extraordinary People Who Made Them.

Politics is a rough business, but John McCain has earned the respect of his colleagues on both sides of the aisle, Republican and Democrat. McCain has exhibited patriotic behavior both before and after he entered the public arena. John McCain developed a reputation as somewhat of a maverick within his own political party, it is this reputation that endeared him to the many people in the country that identify themselves as independents. John McCain will go down as one of the more fascinating political figures in the history of the United States.
